Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Corridor

Clara’s breath hitched in her throat as she stared at the dark smear on the brass handle. She reached out a hesitant, gloved finger, touching the wet substance, and pulled it back to find a thick, crimson stain coating her fingertip. Panic, cold and sharp, spiked through her veins. Someone had been here. Someone had tried to force the door open while Marisa and the child were locked inside.
Before she could process the threat, a heavy floorboard creaked loudly behind her in the shadows of the hallway. Clara spun around, her heart hammering against her ribs, but the corridor was completely empty, illuminated only by the faint moonlight streaming through the tall gothic windows. The shadows stretched long and distorted against the patterned wallpaper, seeming to watch her every move.
Inside the nursery, Marisa paced nervously near the window. She had heard the distinct metallic scrape of a key turning in the external lock, followed by a heavy weight pressing against the wood. She scooped Valentina up into her arms, wrapping a thick wool blanket around the terrified girl. They needed to move, and quickly. Julian had promised protection, but Marisa knew that in this house, promises were as fragile as spun glass.
Suddenly, a soft knock echoed on the heavy oak door. It was not a violent battering, but a polite, rhythmic tap that made Marisa’s blood run cold.
“Marisa,” Julian’s deep voice called out from the hallway, sounding deceptively calm. “Open the door. We need to talk about what happens next.”
Marisa clutched Valentina tighter, her knuckles aching. She stepped toward the door, her hand hovering over the cold brass handle, hesitating. Trusting Julian was a dangerous gamble, but staying locked in this room without an escape route was a death sentence. She twisted the lock and pulled the door open a few inches, peering out into the dim hallway.
Julian stood there, but he wasn’t alone. Clara was standing a few paces behind him, her expression a mask of venomous triumph as she held up a small, blood-stained letter opener she had found on the floor near the entrance.
“It seems we have an uninvited guest in the house, Marisa,” Clara said, her voice dripping with venom. “And it’s not just the child.”
Julian ignored Clara’s provocation, his dark eyes locking onto Marisa with an intensity that demanded absolute obedience. He reached past the housekeeper, pushing the door wide open, and stepped into the room. He knelt down beside Valentina, who cowered against Marisa’s shoulder.
“Pack a bag,” Julian said quietly, his gaze never leaving the little girl. “We are leaving this estate tonight.”
Clara let out a sharp, incredulous laugh from the doorway, stepping into the room and blocking their only exit.

“You aren’t going anywhere, Julian,” Clara sneered, dangling the bloody letter opener dangerously close to Valentina’s face. “The police are already on their way.”
