Chapter 7 - The Sterling Proposal

Arthur stared up at the impeccably groomed woman standing before him, the scent of expensive perfume cutting sharply through the sterile hospital air. He wiped his sweaty palms against his denim jeans, feeling a sudden, deep-seated unease that prickled at the back of his neck.

"I don’t know any Victoria Sterling, and I certainly don't care about the legal foundation representing that criminal who left my daughter to die," Arthur rasped, his voice rough from hours of screaming and crying. "Now please leave me alone. My daughter is fighting for her life in surgery right now."

Victoria didn’t flinch. She gracefully pulled out the empty chair opposite Arthur, seated herself with deliberate poise, and opened a sleek leather portfolio across her lap. She extracted a neatly typed document and slid it slowly across the low coffee table toward him.

"Mr. Vance, let’s be entirely pragmatic," Victoria began, her tone silky and devoid of true empathy. "The man arrested today is a rogue independent contractor for a digital network my firm owns a controlling stake in. His actions were regrettable, yes, but the public relations fallout is catastrophic for our brand. We wish to settle this matter swiftly, quietly, and entirely out of the public eye."

Arthur glanced down at the top page of the document. Bold legal headers stared back at him: NON-DISCLOSURE, RELEASE OF ALL CIVIL CLAIMS, AND MANDATORY SILENCE AGREEMENT. Attached to the back corner of the papers was a cashier’s check made out to Arthur Vance in the amount of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

"What is this?" Arthur whispered, his eyes locking onto the staggering sum of money before rising to meet her cold green gaze.

"That is life-changing money, Mr. Vance," Victoria replied smoothly, leaning forward slightly. "Enough to pay off your modest farmhouse mortgage, fund your granddaughter’s entire collegiate future, and ensure you never have to work another grueling day in your life. All we require in exchange is a simple recorded video statement retracting your previous claims of extortion, and a promise that you will never speak of the roadside incident to law enforcement, journalists, or anyone else ever again."

Arthur felt his blood run cold. They weren’t here to apologize or offer help out of the goodness of their hearts; they were here to buy his silence, to scrub a corporate crime clean with a heavy checkbook while Clara was still unconscious under a surgeon's scalpel.

"You think you can buy my silence about my daughter almost bleeding to death in the dirt?" Arthur growled, his voice rising as fury surged past his exhaustion. "Get that blood money away from me before I tear it to pieces!"

Victoria smiled—a cold, humorless curve of her lips—and calmly picked up her phone, tapping the screen once.

"Think very carefully before you make that choice, Mr. Vance," Victoria murmured quietly. "Hospital bills for premature neonatal intensive care units are notoriously astronomical. And right this second, my associates downstairs are informing your daughter's surgical team that your primary insurance policy was mysteriously canceled due to a clerical error this morning."
