Chapter 11 - The Digital Ghost

The laptop screen flickered in the dim light of the NICU, casting a pale, bluish glow across Arthur’s weathered face. On the display, high-definition footage played from an angle that hadn't been captured on the public live stream. It showed the interior cab of the red pickup truck from behind the driver’s seat, revealing not just the extortion demands, but a clear, close-up shot of the driver receiving a direct phone call from Victoria Sterling’s private corporate number before he ever stopped his truck beside Arthur and Clara on the rural road.
Arthur grabbed the edge of the rolling cart, his knuckles turning stark white as the terrifying implications of the video washed over him.
"That... that wasn't a random encounter," Arthur whispered, his voice shaking with renewed horror. "They were waiting for us. They set the whole thing up."
"Exactly," Leo confirmed, tapping the keyboard to bring up a second document. "The car breakdown you experienced on Route 9 wasn't bad luck either. Look at this work order from the local towing company that hauled your vehicle in yesterday morning. The fuel line was intentionally severed with a clean, surgical cut. Someone wanted you stranded on that specific stretch of highway at that exact time of day."
Arthur felt the room begin to spin. The cruel ransom, the viral streaming stunt, the corporate interference at the hospital—it wasn't just a random act of highway cruelty or opportunistic greed. It was a calculated, premeditated trap. But for what purpose? Why would a multi-billion-dollar corporate conglomerate target an aging grandfather and his pregnant daughter in the middle of nowhere?
"Why us?" Arthur choked out, sinking heavily into a nearby plastic visitor’s chair. "We are nobody. We live on a social security check and a small farm pension. We have no money, no power, no influence. What could they possibly want with us?"
Leo closed the laptop slowly, his expression grim and resolute. "They don’t want you, Mr. Vance. They want the land your family farm sits on. The state recently approved the high-speed rail corridor route, and your homestead sits dead center in the middle of the most lucrative commercial development zone in the county. Your family has owned that acreage for four generations, and your grandfather’s historic deed contains an old water rights covenant that blocks their entire corporate development project from breaking ground."
The pieces clicked together in Arthur’s mind with terrifying clarity. Every terrifying moment on that dusty road, Clara’s premature labor, the public humiliation, the blackmail at the hospital—it was all an orchestrated campaign of psychological warfare designed to break their spirits, force them off their land, and steal their heritage.
"They tried to kill my daughter just to clear a real estate title," Arthur muttered, a cold, blinding wrath replacing his fear. He looked up at Leo with fierce determination. "What do you need me to do?"

Leo leaned in close, whispering his dangerous plan just as the heavy double doors at the end of the hallway suddenly pushed open with a sharp click.
