Chapter 10 - The Secret in the Nursery

The sterile quiet of the neonatal intensive care unit was broken only by the rhythmic, gentle hum of the incubator. Arthur stood beside the clear plastic bassinet, peering through the small circular porthole at his newborn granddaughter. She was impossibly tiny, her skin pink and translucent, rising and falling with tiny, fragile breaths. A miniature oxygen tube rested softly beneath her button nose. Despite the terrifying ordeal of her birth on the side of a dusty highway and her mother’s harrowing brush with death, the baby girl was alive.
Clara, resting in a private recovery suite down the hall, was finally stabilizing after receiving the emergency transfusion just in time. The immediate physical crisis had passed, leaving behind a heavy, oppressive blanket of exhausting silence.
Arthur gently brushed his rough, calloused knuckle against the baby’s minuscule hand, watching instinctively as her tiny fingers instinctively curled around his index finger. A fresh tear spilled over his tired eyes, but this time, it was touched with a fragile, aching tenderness. He had saved her life, but the cost had been absolute. He had signed away his voice, surrendering his right to expose the corporate cruelty that had trapped them on that road, all for a quarter-million dollars he never wanted to touch.
Soft footsteps echoed softly down the linoleum corridor behind him. Arthur turned around, expecting a nurse or a doctor, but instead found a young man in his late twenties wearing a rumpled grey hoodie and a baseball cap pulled low over his eyes. The man held a professional-grade digital camera slung across his shoulder and a bulky laptop under his arm.
"Mr. Vance?" the young man asked in a hushed, urgent whisper, glancing nervously down both ends of the hallway to ensure they were alone. "My name is Leo Bennett. I’m an investigative journalist with the independent news collective that picked up your initial live stream before the corporate censors wiped it from the internet."
Arthur stiffened instantly, his heart hammering against his ribs in sudden terror. He glanced at the door, remembering the strict, ironclad terms of the non-disclosure agreement he had signed with Victoria Sterling not an hour ago.
"Get away from me," Arthur hissed, his voice trembling as he pulled his hand away from the incubator. "I have nothing to say to you. I signed the papers. If you talk to me, they will destroy my family."
Leo didn’t back down; instead, he stepped closer, carefully opening his laptop screen to display a complex web of financial transactions, corporate shell companies, and legal documents.
"Mr. Vance, I know about the non-disclosure agreement, and I know about the payoff," Leo said rapidly, his voice laced with intense urgency. "Sterling’s foundation thinks they silenced you, but they made a critical mistake. They didn’t check who owned the dashcam footage from the truck before the driver wiped his local drive."

Arthur stared at the screen, his breath catching in his throat as Leo pressed play on a video file that revealed a shocking, hidden angle of the roadside extortion.
