Chapter 1 - The Price of a Life

The dust kicked up by the tires of the red pickup truck settled slowly over the dry grass of the rural pasture. Arthur stood frozen beside his daughter, Clara, his knuckles white as he gripped the back of her folding camping chair. Clara’s breath came in ragged, shallow gasps, her hands clamped fiercely over her swollen belly as another sharp wave of labor contractions wrung a stifling groan from her throat. The driver’s window of the truck slid down with a metallic scrape, revealing a middle-aged man with cold, unblinking eyes. Arthur didn’t hesitate, stepping forward to block the open window.
"Please take my granddaughter to the hospital," Arthur pleaded, his voice trembling with a raw, agonizing fatigue.
The driver didn’t turn his engine off. He just stared past Arthur at Clara, who was curled in physical distress. A slow, calculating smirk touched the corner of the driver’s mouth.
"It will cost five hundred dollars cash upfront," the driver stated flatly, his tone completely devoid of human warmth. "Not a penny less. No credit."
Arthur recoiled as if struck, staring at the man in sheer disbelief. "Five hundred dollars? Mister, look at her! We are stranded out here miles from town, and our car broke down an hour ago. I only have twelve dollars in my wallet!"
"That’s your problem, old man," the driver replied, resting his arm casually on the door frame. "Gas isn’t free, and my time has value. You want a taxi service in the middle of nowhere? Pay the price or watch her suffer right here in the dirt."
Clara let out a sharp cry, her fingernails digging deep into her own arms. "Dad, please make him help me! I can't breathe, the baby is coming early!"
Arthur’s face flushed with a mixture of furious rage and crushing humiliation. He slammed his hand against the side of the red pickup truck, his voice cracking with desperation. "Are you out of your mind? A human life is at stake here! How can you stand there and bargain like a vulture?"
The driver didn’t flinch. He looked directly into the dashboard-mounted smartphone camera that was live-streaming the entire encounter to a growing audience of online viewers.
"Save the lecture, grandpa," the driver said, leaning out the window with a sinister grin. "Don't worry. Tell the viewers to like, follow, and share this video and I'll take her to the hospital."
