Chapter 6 - The Shadow on the Shoulder

The black luxury SUV slipped seamlessly into the stream of traffic far behind the speeding ambulance, maintaining a precise, calculated distance. Inside the climate-controlled leather interior, a man in an expensive tailored suit adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, watching the flashing red and blue lights reflect off the polished hood of his vehicle. His phone rested on the center console, displaying the viral live-stream footage that had now reached every major news network in the country.

The man tapped the screen, bringing up a private encrypted messaging app, and typed a single, cryptic instruction to an unknown recipient: The girl survived the flatline. Execute Phase Two of the acquisition immediately.

Miles ahead, the ambulance screamed through the automated gates of St. Jude Memorial Hospital’s emergency trauma bay. Orderlies and emergency physicians were already waiting outside the sliding glass doors, their faces grim and focused. The moment the vehicle came to a complete halt, the rear doors flew open, and Clara was whisked into the sterile, brightly lit corridors of the trauma unit. Arthur tumbled out of the passenger seat of the escort vehicle, stumbling as his exhausted legs hit the pavement, but a state trooper caught his arm to steady him.

"Stay calm, Mr. Vance. The best trauma surgeons in the state are taking care of her right now," the trooper said gently, guiding Arthur toward the family waiting room.

Arthur could barely process the words. His mind was an exhausted blur of adrenaline, fear, and lingering shock from the roadside extortion. He collapsed into a stiff plastic chair in the corner of the sterile waiting room, staring blankly at the beige linoleum floor. A nurse brought him a small paper cup of water, which his trembling hands could barely hold without spilling.

"Her vitals are stabilizing in the operating theater, but due to the severe blood loss and premature labor, the obstetrician is preparing for an emergency Cesarean section," the nurse explained softly, resting a comforting hand on Arthur’s shoulder. "We’re fighting for both of them."

Arthur nodded mutely, taking a small sip of the cold water. The waiting room television was tuned to a 24-hour news channel, and to Arthur’s shock, a breaking news banner flashed across the screen: VIRAL ROAD EXTORTION ARREST: MILLIONS DEMAND JUSTICE AS IDENTITY OF DRIVER REVEALED. The broadcast displayed the mugshot of the man who had demanded five hundred dollars, alongside footage of Arthur pleading into the phone.

Before Arthur could process the surreal nature of seeing his own face on national television, the heavy double doors of the waiting room pushed open with a soft swish. A tall, sharply dressed woman wearing an expensive designer coat and dark sunglasses walked directly toward him, ignoring the receptionist entirely. She stopped in front of Arthur’s chair, pulled down her sunglasses, and revealed piercing green eyes.

"Mr. Arthur Vance?" she asked, her voice calm, controlled, and chillingly polite. "My name is Victoria Sterling. I represent the legal foundation that funds the man currently sitting in police custody. We need to talk about what you saw on that road, and what you’re going to sign."
