Chapter 5 - The Flatline Miracle

The high-pitched, continuous drone of the heart monitor hung in the crisp highway air like a death sentence. Arthur collapsed against the side of the ambulance, his legs completely giving out beneath him as the harsh reality shattered his remaining hope. Paramedics continued frantic chest compressions, working with fierce, synchronized urgency while a second medic inserted an emergency IV line directly into Clara’s arm.

"Come on, stay with us, young lady. Breathe," the lead paramedic muttered fiercely, his forehead slick with sweat as he manually pumped the bag-valve mask over Clara’s pale face.

State troopers secured the perimeter, keeping onlookers and the whimpering, handcuffed driver far away from the active life-saving zone. The live stream phone, still resting on the dashboard of the red pickup truck, continued broadcasting the frantic medical scene to an audience of over three million live viewers who sat in stunned, collective silence across the nation. The comments had stopped scrolling rapidly; instead, millions of people were typing desperate prayers into the chat, watching the grim struggle unfold with bated breath.

For thirty agonizing seconds, the flatline tone refused to break. Arthur buried his face in his weathered hands, whispering a silent, desperate plea to heaven not to take his only child and unborn grandchild away from him.

Suddenly, a faint, erratic blip broke the uniform tone. Beep. Beep-beep.

"We have a pulse! Sinus rhythm returning, weak but stable!" the paramedic shouted over the commotion. "Charge the adrenaline drip and let's roll! We need to move to trauma center immediately!"

The medical team swarmed around the gurney, lifting it with practiced precision and sliding it into the back of the rushing ambulance. Arthur scrambled to climb inside, but the lead paramedic gently placed a hand on his shoulder, shaking his head.

"Sir, you need to ride in the front passenger seat with the state trooper. We’re working on her actively in the back; we don't have the physical space," the paramedic explained firmly, though his eyes held a glimmer of newfound hope.

Arthur nodded numbly, stumbling around to the front of the ambulance and climbing into the passenger seat as the vehicle’s heavy diesel engine roared to life. Sirens wailed, and the ambulance shot forward down the highway, escorted by two state police cruisers with lights flashing. As they tore around a sharp bend, Arthur looked out the side window and caught a brief glimpse of a black luxury SUV parked on the shoulder, its tinted windows slowly rolling down to reveal a cold, familiar face watching them pass.
