Chapter 9: The Unraveling of Isabella

The shouting in the grand salon gradually subsided into a heavy, suffocating silence. The board members sat back in their armchairs, stunned by the sheer scale of the financial betrayal laid bare before them. Isabella Vance remained motionless at the head of the table, her hands folded neatly over her lap, refusing to look at anyone.

"Is there any defense you wish to offer, Isabella?" Julian asked quietly, his voice devoid of anger now, replaced by a hollow, weary sadness.

Isabella slowly raised her head. Her dark eyes, usually flashing with unyielding authority, looked tired and brittle. She stood up, smoothing the front of her blazer with agonizing slowness.

"You think this is a victory, Julian?" Isabella asked, her voice steady and chillingly calm. "You think handing the keys to a kitchen girl and a bunch of lawyers saves this family? Blackwood Manor was built on ambition, sacrifice, and ruthless choices. I made those choices so you could live in this gilded cage without ever having to dirty your hands."

"You made them to protect your own power," Julian replied, stepping closer to her. "You ruined my youth, you banished Clara's mother, and you treated human lives like disposable chess pieces. That isn't sacrifice, Isabella. That's tyranny."

"Call it whatever helps you sleep at night," Isabella retorted, her lips curling into a bitter smile. She unpinned the diamond brooch from her lapel—a family heirloom passed down through generations of mistresses of the house—and placed it gently on the center of the oak table. "I am leaving. My lawyers will handle the divorce settlement. Don't bother trying to recover the offshore funds; they are already secured in jurisdictions your little board cannot touch."

She turned and walked toward the double doors of the salon. The board members parted silently, watching her go with a mixture of awe and revulsion. As she passed Clara, Isabella paused for a fraction of a second, her gaze dropping to the young woman’s face.

"Enjoy your inheritance," Isabella whispered venomously. "You'll find that wearing a crown of stolen gold is heavier than scrubbing floors."

With that, she pushed the heavy oak doors open and walked out into the corridor, her heels clicking rhythmically against the marble until the sound faded entirely into the quiet expanse of the manor.
