Chapter 6: The Gathering Storm

The grand foyer of Blackwood Manor buzzed with a tense, unnatural energy as the morning light pierced the high stained-glass windows. Servants moved in hushed whispers, exchanging nervous glances as rumors of the family schism spread like wildfire through the quarters. Isabella Vance stood at the top of the grand staircase, her posture rigid, dressed in a sharp navy blazer and trousers that signaled she was ready for battle.
Below her, Julian stood beside Clara and little Lily, who clung tightly to her mother's skirt. Julian had arranged for the estate attorney, Arthur Pendelton, to arrive early. Pendelton stood near the heavy oak doors clutching a thick leather briefcase, looking acutely uncomfortable in the midst of a domestic war zone.
"Julian, have you completely lost your senses?" Isabella’s voice echoed down the stairwell, sharp and authoritative. She descended slowly, her heels clicking rhythmically against the marble. "Dragging strangers into the foyer at dawn and inviting bankruptcy lawyers into our home before the servants even finish breakfast?"
"They aren't strangers, Isabella, and you know it," Julian said, stepping forward to meet her halfway up the stairs. "Arthur is here to review the asset transfers you initiated last night. The properties in Westchester belong to the primary trust, not your personal portfolio."
Isabella stopped three steps above him, looking down with a mixture of contempt and panic. "You are acting on emotion, driven by a cheap romance novel fantasy. You think because some kitchen girl claims a bloodline that you can dismantle thirty years of stability? The board will never approve this. I hold forty percent of the voting shares."
"Not anymore," a calm, deep voice echoed from the doorway.
Everyone turned to see Arthur Pendelton step forward, opening his briefcase and pulling out a certified document. "Pardon the interruption, Mrs. Vance, but under the original incorporation charter of Blackwood Holdings drafted by your late father-in-law, any deliberate dissipation of estate assets constitutes an immediate forfeiture of voting privileges, reverting all proxy rights back to the primary bloodline heir." Pendelton adjusted his glasses, looking directly at Clara. "Which, legally established by verified DNA records secured last night, is Miss Clara Vance."

A collective gasp echoed through the foyer. One of the young footmen dropping a silver tray against the marble floor, the sharp crash shattering the heavy silence.
Isabella’s face drained of color, the haughty mask finally cracking to reveal pure, unadulterated shock. She looked from the attorney to Julian, and finally to Clara, who stood quietly holding her daughter’s hand. For the first time in decades, the formidable mistress of Blackwood Manor found herself entirely without words.
