Chapter 7: Fractured Alliances

The library doors remained locked from the inside as Julian, Arthur Pendelton, and Clara sat around the mahogany desk. Outside, Isabella had retreated to her private quarters in the west wing, summoning her personal legal counsel via encrypted phone calls. The war for Blackwood Manor had officially moved from whispered insults to a methodical, legal dismantling.

"The transfer of the Westchester properties can be reversed through an emergency injunction," Pendelton explained, pointing a fountain pen at a dense paragraph of legalese. "However, it will require your signature, Clara, as the primary beneficiary of the reinstated trust."

Clara stared down at the papers, her heart pounding against her ribs. The sheer magnitude of the estate—the land, the capital, the historic home—felt like a crushing weight. She had spent her entire life scrubbing floors, worrying about rent and winter coats, and now she held the keys to an empire.

"I don't know the first thing about running a corporation, Mr. Pendelton," Clara admitted, her voice trembling slightly. "My mother taught me how to bake bread and mend linens. She didn't teach me how to manage a trust fund."

"You don't need to know corporate finance on day one," Julian said gently, leaning across the desk. "You just need to be yourself. I will handle the operations, and Arthur will guide the legal transition. All you need to do is authorize us to protect what is rightfully yours—and protect Lily's future."

Clara looked at Julian, seeing the profound remorse and fierce loyalty in his amber-flecked eyes. She nodded slowly, taking the fountain pen he offered and signing her name at the bottom of the document. The scratch of the nib against parchment felt like the final severing of an old, painful chapter of her life.

Suddenly, a sharp knock echoed at the library door before it pushed open without waiting for permission. It was Marcus Vance, Julian’s cousin and the corporate liaison for Blackwood Holdings. Marcus looked flushed, his tie loosened, breathing heavily as if he had run all the way from the east wing.

"Julian, you’ve gone completely insane," Marcus blurted out, ignoring Pendelton and Clara entirely. "The board is in an uproar. Isabella just called an emergency shareholder meeting for noon. She’s telling everyone that you’ve installed a fraudulent claimant to seize control of the board."

"Let her call the meeting," Julian replied coldly, standing up to face his cousin. "Bring the board members down to the grand salon. I want every single one of them to hear the truth directly from the source."

Marcus hesitated, eyeing Clara with undisguised hostility before looking back at Julian. "You're tearing the family apart over a maid."

"She is my daughter, Marcus," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying an authority that brooked no argument. "And if you ever refer to her in that tone again, you'll be joining Isabella on the outside."
