Chapter 5: Dawn at the Gatehouse

The morning sun broke over the rolling hills of the Blackwood estate, casting long, golden rays across the frost-covered lawns. Inside the modest stone gatehouse near the main entrance, Clara sat at a small wooden table, buttering a piece of toast for her daughter, Lily. The little girl sat swinging her legs, her amber eyes wide and curious as she watched her mother pack the cardboard box back up.
"Are we going home, Mommy?" Lily asked, tilting her head.
"We’re going to figure things out, sweetheart," Clara answered, offering a reassuring smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. She was terrified of what the new day would bring, knowing that the powerful woman in the manor would not surrender easily.
A sharp knock at the door made them both jump. Clara opened it to find Julian standing on the stone porch, his three-piece grey suit replaced by a simple woolen sweater and trousers. He looked tired, having spent the entire night in the study going through financial ledgers and legal briefs, but his expression was resolute.
"May I come in?" Julian asked softly, keeping his hands visible to avoid startling them.
Clara hesitated, then stepped aside. "The gatehouse is small, Mr. Vance. Not quite what you're used to."
Julian stepped inside, ducking slightly beneath the low wooden lintel. He knelt down to eye level with little Lily, who stared at him without fear, her bright amber eyes mirroring his own. Julian felt a lump form in his throat. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small wooden carved horse he had kept from his own childhood—a simple toy that had survived the sterile opulence of the main house.
"For you," Julian said, holding out the horse. "If you'll let me."
Lily took the toy, her face lighting up with a gap-toothed smile. "Thank you, mister."
Julian looked up at Clara, his expression solemn. "I spent the night looking at the books, Clara. Isabella has already transferred the titles of three subsidiary properties to her brother's name in anticipation of a divorce. She’s preparing to strip the estate and leave before the audit hits."
"She’s clever," Clara said quietly. "She’s had decades to prepare for a day she knew might eventually come."
"She thinks she can outrun me, but she doesn't know how deep my own investigation went last night," Julian said, standing up and dusting off his knees. "I’ve frozen the primary accounts. The local authorities are already aware of the asset transfers. But we need to move fast. I want you and Lily to move into the main house today—into the east wing, my mother's old rooms."
May you like
"Julian, I can't," Clara protested, shaking her head. "Moving into the manor as a guest—or whatever I am—will only make things worse. Isabella will tear me apart."
"Isabella won't be in the manor much longer," Julian replied grimly. "Her reign is finished."
