Chapter 14: The Annual Shareholder Meeting

The annual shareholder meeting of Blackwood Holdings was the most anticipated corporate event of the decade. Held in the grand ballroom of the manor—the very room where Clara had once scrubbed marble floors—the space was filled to capacity with investors, media representatives, board members, and financial analysts.

Julian and Clara stood backstage, reviewing the final agenda. Clara wore a tailored midnight-blue suit, her dark hair pinned back in an elegant twist, looking every inch the rightful heir to the Blackwood legacy. Little Lily was with Mrs. Higgins in the private family parlor, safe and sound.

"Are you ready?" Julian asked, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

"I'm ready," Clara replied, taking a deep, steadying breath.

Out in the ballroom, Marcus Vance stepped up to the podium, adjusting the microphone. The murmurs in the crowd died down instantly. Marcus looked unusually confident, a sharp, predatory smile playing on his lips as he scanned the room.

"Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed shareholders," Marcus began, his voice echoing smoothly across the hall. "Before we proceed with the standard operational review, I must present an urgent motion concerning corporate governance and financial integrity. Recent discoveries regarding the validity of the current executive succession have raised serious questions among major investors."

The murmurs in the crowd grew louder. Cameras flashed from the press gallery.

Marcus pressed a button on the podium, and the large projector screen behind him flickered to life. Instead of financial ledgers, the screen displayed a series of scanned, highly confidential documents—mortgage defaults, undisclosed personal loans, and forged signature affidavits linked to the Blackwood trust.

"As you can see," Marcus continued, projecting manufactured outrage, "our primary beneficiary—a woman with no prior corporate standing whose lineage has been pushed through under suspicious circumstances—has systematically mismanaged asset allocations to cover personal liabilities."

A chorus of gasps echoed through the ballroom. Reporters began typing furiously on their phones.

Suddenly, the side doors of the ballroom swung open with a resounding thud. Clara walked down the center aisle, her head held high, her amber eyes blazing with quiet fury. Julian followed closely behind her, accompanied by Arthur Pendelton, who carried a thick, secure metal briefcase.

"Lies make for good theater, Marcus, but they make terrible evidence," Clara said, her voice cutting through the noise with absolute authority as she stepped up to the podium.

Marcus blinked, visibly shaken as Clara stepped right beside him, gesturing for him to step aside. He hesitated, but the sheer intensity in her gaze forced him to retreat a few steps.

Pendelton opened the metal briefcase on the podium, pulling out a certified injunction and a high-resolution forensic report. "The documents displayed on the screen have been digitally altered," Pendelton announced to the stunned crowd. "Furthermore, the forensic unit of the financial crimes division has traced the origin of these fabricated documents directly to an offshore IP address registered to Isabella Vance and co-managed by Marcus Vance."

Pendelton clicked a remote, and a new slide appeared on the screen—a detailed bank transfer ledger showing millions of dollars moving from corporate accounts into private Swiss holdings controlled jointly by Isabella and Marcus.

"This is an outright fabrication!" Marcus shouted, his face turning pale as the media cameras swung away from the screen and focused directly on him.

"The authorities are already waiting in the lobby, Marcus," Julian said coldly, stepping up to the microphone. "Your conspiracy with Isabella is over."
