Chapter 13: Whispers of Treason

The success of Clara’s first board meeting sent shockwaves through Blackwood Holdings. Over the next three weeks, Clara immersed herself in the intricacies of corporate governance, studying late into the night with Julian and working closely with Arthur Pendelton. The anxiety that had initially paralyzed her slowly gave way to a quiet, unshakeable confidence.
However, beneath the surface of the manor's newfound stability, subtle warning signs began to appear.
Late one evening, as Clara walked down the dimly lit corridor of the west wing toward the nursery to check on Lily, she noticed a light flickering beneath the door of Isabella’s former private office—a room that had been officially sealed pending the divorce settlement.
Clara stopped, her instincts tingling. She pushed the heavy wooden door open cautiously.
Inside, the room was dark except for the glow of a laptop screen sitting on the mahogany desk. A figure stood near the window, cloaked in shadows. As the floorboards creaked under Clara’s weight, the figure turned sharply.
It wasn't Isabella. It was Marcus.
"Working late, cousin?" Clara asked, her voice cutting through the quiet room with sharp authority.
Marcus blinked in surprise, quickly closing the laptop lid. He recovered his composure with a strained, oily smile, stepping away from the desk. "Just tying up some loose ends regarding the Westchester properties, Clara. Julian asked me to review the deed transfers."
"Julian didn't authorize anyone to access this room," Clara said, stepping further into the office, her amber eyes narrowing. "And the Westchester deeds were locked in the main vault yesterday morning. What are you actually doing here, Marcus?"
Marcus chuckled nervously, taking a step toward the door. "You’re getting a bit paranoid with your new title, aren't you? It’s just corporate paperwork. No need to turn it into a spy thriller."
"Get out," Clara commanded, pointing toward the door with the exact same unyielding firmness she had inherited from the Blackwood bloodline. "If I catch you in this wing again without written authorization, I won't just lock you out of the board room. I’ll have security escort you off the premises permanently."
Marcus scowled, his polished facade slipping for a brief second to reveal a flash of genuine malice. He walked past her, brushing his shoulder against hers as he muttered under his breath, "Enjoy your little victory while it lasts, kitchen girl. Empires built on sand always wash away."

When Marcus was gone, Clara walked over to the desk and opened the laptop he had been using. The screen was locked with a password, but the background application was still visible—an encrypted messaging program with a single active chat window. The most recent outgoing message read: The audit is accelerating. We need to execute phase two before the annual shareholder vote.
The recipient's name was hidden, but the avatar was a familiar burgundy silk crest. Isabella was still pulling the strings from the shadows.
