CHAPTER 8: The Cornered Wolf

Howard’s abrupt dismissal sent shockwaves through Wall Street. The stock for Sterling Enterprises dipped briefly before stabilizing as investors recognized that the board was finally undergoing a long-overdue cleanup.
Meanwhile, Victoria had retreated to an expensive boutique hotel in Midtown, watching news anchors dissect her fallen status on live television.
Late that evening, her phone buzzed with an encrypted message from an unknown number.
*“Meet me by the docks at Pier 54. We still have a card to play.”*
Victoria wrapped herself in a long black trench coat and took a private cab into the industrial outskirts of the harbor. Fog rolled thick off the Hudson River.
Waiting beneath a flickering sodium streetlight was Marcus Cole, her former attorney, smoking a cigarette with nervous, jerky motions.
“What are you doing, Marcus?” Victoria demanded, pulling her collar up against the biting wind. “The police are already reviewing the offshore accounts!”
“Julian didn’t destroy the original adoption revocations,” Marcus whispered urgently. “Before Julian married you, he signed a clause that would invalidate any bloodline claim if the child was raised under an alias outside of state jurisdiction. If we get Clara’s Maine adoption records and destroy them, Arthur can't file the permanent title in court next week.”
Victoria looked at him, her eyes narrowing with desperation. “Where are the records kept?”

“In the safe of the small parish in her hometown,” Marcus replied. “We leave tonight.”
