CHAPTER 5: The Secret in the Study

That night, the massive house was quiet. Clara sat in Julian Sterling’s private study, a room lined floor-to-ceiling with dark walnut bookshelves, antique leather volumes, and the comforting scent of cedarwood.

Arthur gently placed Julian’s private journal onto the desk in front of her.

Clara turned the yellowed pages. Her father’s handwriting was firm and deliberate, but on the pages dated nine years ago, the ink was smudged with dried tears.

> *"They told me Eleanor and the baby were lost off the coast of Maine. The world thinks I have everything, but my soul died today. If this emptiness ever ends, let it be because truth found its way home. To my daughter, if you are alive: look behind the portrait of the lighthouse."*

Clara looked up at the oil painting above the marble fireplace. It depicted a solitary lighthouse standing firm against a raging storm—the very lighthouse outside her childhood window in Maine.

With Arthur’s help, Clara gently tilted the heavy canvas. Behind it sat a small wall safe. She inserted the heavy bronze key into the brass slot. With a satisfying, deep mechanical *click*, the safe swung open.

Inside was not cash or bearer bonds. It was a single, hand-stitched baby blanket, a worn silver locket containing a photograph of Eleanor, and an audio cassette labeled in neat ink: *FOR MY DAUGHTER CLARA.*
