CHAPTER 3: The Cold Light of Morning

The cathedral had cleared in chaos. The wedding was abandoned; the vows were never spoken.

Victoria sat in the penthouse suite of the Sterling Tower, tearing off her six-figure lace gown with manic fury. White silk ripped across the hardwood floor. Beside her, her personal attorney, Marcus Cole, frantically scrolled through confidential bank ledgers on his tablet.

“Tell me we can freeze the trusts, Marcus!” Victoria hissed, her manicured nails digging into the mahogany desk. “She’s a child! She can’t just walk in with a rusted key and seize an eight-billion-dollar estate!”

“It’s not just a key, Victoria,” Marcus said quietly, his voice pale. “Julian created an impenetrable bloodline trust. The key contains a micro-encoded biometric signature. Arthur ran Clara’s DNA through the state registry twenty minutes ago. It’s a 99.9% match. Julian made sure that the moment his true heir touched that key, every asset, every account, and every property transferred directly to her legal guardian.”

Victoria froze, her heart thumping wildly against her ribs. “And who is her guardian? The mother is dead!”

Marcus swallowed hard, avoiding her eyes. “Julian’s will specifies that Arthur Pendelton and the state-appointed child advocacy board serve as co-trustees. You have been entirely cut off. The house, the penthouse, the cars... they belong to the Vance-Sterling Trust now.”

Outside the glass windows, the city woke up beneath a blanket of grey autumn fog. Down below, the streetlights reflected in puddles, and Clara Vance was coming to claim her name.
