Chapter 8 - The Noon Execution

The clock tower in downtown struck twelve times, its heavy bronze chimes echoing across the plaza like a death knell. Inside the towering glass-and-steel monolith of Sterling Headquarters, the executive boardroom was packed to capacity. Board members, legal counsel, and major shareholders sat in tense, whispered clusters around the obsidian conference table.

At the center seat sat David Vance, looking every bit the ruthless politician he was, wearing an immaculate navy suit and a serene, victorious smile. To his right, Clara sat clutching a silver compact, reapplying her lipstick with shaky hands, her eyes darting nervously toward the double doors.

“As interim managing director,” David announced, his voice projecting smoothly across the room, “I am calling this emergency session to order. We are here to formally nullify all fraudulent share transfers initiated by the late Eleanor Sterling and ratify the Vance-Sterling merger.”

A murmur of assent rippled through the sycophantic board members. Hands were already raised, ready to vote away the last vestiges of independence, when the heavy oak doors slowly swung inward.

Julianna walked in alone. She wore a pristine white trench coat over her charcoal suit, her dark hair immaculate, her expression a mask of absolute, unyielding ice.

“You forgot one item on the agenda, David,” Julianna said, her voice effortlessly carrying to every corner of the vast room.

Clara jumped to her feet, her chair scraping loudly against the marble floor. “Security! How did she get in here? Drag her out! She’s a criminal trespasser!”

David held up a single hand, his smile widening into something predatory. He gestured toward the security guards stationed by the doors, but they didn’t move. They simply stared at Julianna with blank, disciplined eyes.

“Let her speak, Clara,” David purred, leaning back in his leather chair and lacing his fingers together over his stomach. “Let’s hear what the little orphan has to say before we hand her over to the federal marshals waiting in the lobby.”

Julianna calmly walked to the head of the table, pulling a thick brown envelope from her coat and dropping it right in front of David.

“You can call the marshals all you want, David,” Julianna said softly, leaning her palms against the table and looking him dead in the eye. “But before they put the cuffs on me, they’re going to want to hear the recording of you conspiring with the Serpent Guild to murder your own brother’s business partner.”

The color drained entirely from David’s face. The serene, untouchable politician mask fractured instantly, his jaw tightening into a hard, desperate line.

“You’re bluffing,” David hissed, though his voice lacked its previous confident boom.

Julianna pressed a small button on a remote control in her pocket. Instantly, the crystal-clear audio of David threatening Eleanor in the holding cell began to play over the boardroom’s high-end surround sound speakers.

Before the recording could reach its second sentence, the boardroom windows behind David exploded inward in a shower of glass and razor-sharp shrapnel.
