Chapter 12 - The Ticking Clock

The red light pulsed rhythmically in the dim vault, casting an eerie, warning glow across the faces of the trapped family. The digital timer on the small explosive device clicked silently downward: 05:00… 04:59…
“Get back!” Marcus shouted, throwing his arm out to push Julianna behind a concrete pillar.
Richard dropped his gun, falling to his knees as he stared at the blinking red light in sheer, unadulterated terror. “We’re going to die here. David is going to blow us all to hell.”
Clara began to hyperventilate, sliding down the metal shelving until she hit the floor, her manicured fingers clawing desperately at her diamond necklace as if trying to rip it off. “No, no, no! This wasn’t supposed to happen! I’m a Sterling! I’m supposed to win!”
Julianna ignored the panic around her. She knelt beside the open box, ignoring Marcus’s warnings, and carefully lifted the top document. It wasn’t just a legal deed; it was the original autopsy report and police blotter from twenty-five years ago, bearing the signature of a young precinct captain named David Vance.
“He didn’t just try to kill my mother,” Julianna whispered, her voice dangerously calm as she read the coroner’s notes. “He locked her in this very vault twenty-five years ago. And Eleanor… you knew.”
Eleanor stood motionless, her eyes filled with unshed tears. “I didn’t have the power to stop them then, Julianna. The Serpent Guild owned the police, the courts, and the banks. I traded my silence for your survival.”
“That wasn’t protection,” Julianna said, looking up at the matriarch with eyes full of pure, unyielding ice. “That was complicity.”
The timer clicked lower: 02:15… 02:14…
Marcus was hammering desperately at the manual override panel near the steel door, sparks flying as he short-circuited the wiring with the metal barrel of his pen. “The circuit board is fried! We need the master decryption key to disarm the charge!”
Julianna stood up slowly, clutching the documents to her chest. She looked across the vault at Richard and Clara, then turned her gaze toward the heavy steel door that separated them from David Vance and his syndicate masters.
“Marcus,” Julianna said steadily. “Step away from the door.”
“What are you doing?” Marcus asked, looking back in alarm. “You can’t disarm it without the code!”
“I’m not going to disarm it,” Julianna replied, walking over to the computer terminal where the vault’s internal communications relay was still active. She punched a single sequence into the console, connecting her mic directly to the security office upstairs.
“David,” Julianna said clearly into the comms mic, her voice echoing through the upper floors of the skyscraper.
On the other end of the line, through the static, David Vance’s triumphant voice crackled back: “Enjoy your final moments in the dark, Julianna. The merger is signed. You lost.”
“I didn’t lose, David,” Julianna smiled coldly, pressing the transmit button. “I just forwarded a copy of this vault’s live camera feed and the original murder confession to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, every major news network, and the entire Serpent Guild syndicate.”

The voice on the other end stopped dead. Silence stretched across the comms line for three agonizing seconds before David screamed a curse.
