Chapter 5 - The Heir’s True Face

The private dining room at The Gilded Lily was shielded from the prying eyes of the city’s gossip columnists by thick velvet drapes and armed security posted at every entrance. Julianna sat alone at the center table, cutting a piece of rare steak with clinical precision. The door clicked open, and Marcus Sterling—Richard’s estranged uncle and the black sheep of the family—stepped out of the shadows.

Marcus wore an old, worn trench coat, smelling faintly of pipe tobacco and rain. He pulled out the chair opposite Julianna and sat down without an invitation.

“You’ve caused quite a stir, niece,” Marcus said, his voice raspy and weathered. “Eleanor is locked up in federal custody, Arthur Vance is liquidating his assets at a fifty percent loss, and Richard is currently drowning his sorrows in a dive bar on the wharf.”

Julianna set her silverware down with a soft clink. “They thought they could bury the truth under layers of trust funds and champagne towers. They forgot that ash doesn’t stay buried forever.”

Marcus leaned forward, resting his elbows on the linen tablecloth. He studied Julianna’s face, tracing the sharp line of her jaw and the dark, intense gaze that mirrored his own late sister’s.

“You have her eyes, you know,” Marcus murmured softly. “And her unforgiving stubbornness. But taking down Arthur and Eleanor is only the first layer. The federal indictment isn’t going to hold for long unless you have the physical ledgers from the Swiss accounts.”

Julianna reached into her briefcase and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive, placing it gently on the center of the table.

“I don’t need the physical ledgers, Marcus,” Julianna replied, a faint, dangerous smile touching her lips. “I have the original microfilms that prove Eleanor didn’t just embezzle from the Vance group—she inherited the entire Sterling fortune through an unrecorded prenuptial agreement that predates grandfather’s first marriage.”

Marcus’s eyes widened, a rare flash of genuine shock breaking through his hardened exterior. “If the courts validate that document, every single asset Richard, Clara, and Arthur own legally belongs to you. You aren’t just taking over the company. You’re wiping them off the map entirely.”

“Precisely,” Julianna said, picking up her wine glass.

Before Marcus could respond, the heavy velvet drapes behind him were violently ripped aside. A masked figure stepped through the window frame, holding a silenced pistol pointed directly at Julianna’s chest.

“Don’t move,” a distorted electronic voice hissed from the shadows. “Hand over the drive, or the girl dies right here.”
