Chapter 11 - The Iron Trap

A deafening metallic clang reverberated through the subterranean vault as the massive titanium door slammed completely shut, the digital locking mechanism clicking into place with a series of heavy hydraulic thuds.

Clara spun around, screaming in blind panic, and fired her derringer blindly at the steel door. The bullet sparked harmlessly against the reinforced plating, ricocheting dangerously close to Richard’s ear.

“Stop shooting, you idiot!” Richard roared, grabbing Clara’s arm and shoving her backward against a stack of metal shelving. “You’ll jam the manual release!”

Marcus rushed to the control panel beside the door, his fingers flying across the keypad. But the screen flashed a single, blood-red word: LOCKDOWN.

“We’re sealed in,” Marcus said grimly, turning around to face the room. “Someone outside just activated the blast protocols from the master security terminal upstairs.”

Eleanor slowly closed the silver Zippo, slipping it back into the pocket of her black gown. She didn’t look panicked; instead, a strange, grim serenity washed over her weathered features.

“David,” Eleanor murmured, shaking her head. “The fool thinks that by burying us here, he erases the past. But he doesn’t realize what’s buried beneath this floor.”

Julianna turned her attention back to the matriarch, stepping closer despite Clara’s wild waving of the gun. “Answer my question, Eleanor. What happened to my mother twenty-five years ago?”

Eleanor sighed, the sound heavy with decades of suppressed guilt. She gestured with her cane toward a recessed panel in the rear wall of the vault, hidden behind a heavy iron shelving unit.

“Your mother wasn’t an outsider, Julianna,” Eleanor said quietly. “She was my eldest daughter. Your mother was the true heir to the Sterling empire.”

Clara lowered her pistol slightly, her mouth dropping open in sheer disbelief. “That’s… that’s a lie! My father said the family line only ran through Richard’s father!”

“Arthur lied to protect his own embezzlement,” Eleanor replied coldly. “Your father and David orchestrated your mother’s disappearance, Julianna. They tried to kill her so they could seize the trust. I hid you away to save your life, hoping one day you’d come back and finish what I was too cowardly to start.”

Julianna stared at Eleanor, the final pieces of the puzzle snapping into place with chilling clarity. She walked over to the hidden wall panel and pulled it open.

Inside sat a pristine, old-fashioned audio reel and a thick stack of legal documents bearing a red wax seal.

Marcus stepped forward to help her pull the box out, but as the lid came off, a small red blinking light began to pulse from inside the container.

“Julianna,” Marcus whispered, his face turning pale. “That’s a proximity detonator.”
