Chapter 1 - The First Cut

The taste of warm brut champagne and crushed fondant lingered on Julianna’s tongue, a bitter reminder of the humiliation she had just endured. Across the ruined remnants of the multi-tiered white wedding cake, Julianna stood in her ruined emerald green sleeveless dress, dark brown waves plastered to her collarbone, breathing with a measured, lethal calm. The grand ballroom of the Sterling Estate had fallen into a breathless, suffocating silence.
Clara adjusted the straps of her magenta gown, her diamond necklace catching the glittering crystal chandeliers overhead as a smug, provocative smile curved her lips.
“You never belonged here, Julianna,” Clara sneered, crossing her bare arms over her chest. “A common street urchin playing dress-up in high society. Richard was always going to choose someone from his own world.”
Richard, handsome in his black tuxedo and bowtie, stepped between them, his face pale and defensive.
“Have you lost your mind?” Richard yelled, his voice cracking slightly under the pressure of a hundred staring elites. “Do you realize what you’ve just destroyed, Julianna? Clara is a Sterling by blood and by future!”
Julianna didn’t flinch. She wiped a streak of white buttercream and sticky champagne from her cheek, her dark eyes locking onto Richard’s with a terrifying intensity.
“You talk about bloodlines, Richard?” Julianna whispered, her voice cutting through the ambient hum of the terrified crowd. “Ask your precious Clara whose money actually bought this estate. Ask her where the foundation of this entire empire came from before she tries to rewrite history.”
Before Richard could formulate a defense, the heavy oak doors at the far end of the ballroom swung open with a resounding thud. A towering security detail parted like the Red Sea, and Eleanor Sterling strode into the room. The elderly matriarch wore a formal black gown and a diamond necklace that rivaled a royal treasury. Her presence commanded absolute submission, freezing the entire room in place.
Julianna’s breath hitched. Staring at the woman who held the keys to the city’s darkest secrets, Julianna whispered under her breath:
“Mother?”
Eleanor stopped ten paces away, her cane tapping sharply against the imported Italian marble. She completely ignored Richard and Clara, her sharp, unblinking gaze locking solely onto Julianna.

“Clean yourself up, child,” Eleanor commanded, her voice dropping the room’s temperature by ten degrees. “We have an inheritance to reclaim, and the real war is just beginning.”
