Chapter 4 - The Matriarch’s Gambit

The blue and red lights of unmarked federal vehicles painted the marble floors of the Sterling lobby in pulsing, hypnotic flashes. Julianna stared down from the mezzanine balcony, watching four armed agents escort Eleanor toward the exit. The elderly matriarch did not look frail; she walked with her head held high, her black coat draped over her shoulders like a royal cape, offering a single, subtle nod to Julianna as she passed.
Arthur Vance pushed past Richard on the stairs, his cell phone clutched to his ear as he shouted orders to his legal team.
“It’s a hostile takeover disguised as a federal indictment!” Arthur roared, spitting the words at Julianna as he reached the landing. “You planned this! You traded Eleanor to the DOJ to clear the path for your own coup!”
Julianna turned slowly, her expression completely unreadable. “If I wanted to destroy Eleanor, Arthur, I wouldn’t have waited until the wedding cake was ruined. Your panic is showing, and it’s remarkably unbecoming for a man of your stature.”
Clara sprinted up the stairs, her manicured nails digging into the polished wooden banister. Her composure had completely shattered; the mask of high-society perfection was gone, replaced by a raw, feral panic.
“You bitch!” Clara shrieked, lunging forward with her hand raised to strike Julianna across the face. “You ruined everything! Richard is ruined, my family is ruined, and you think you’re going to walk out of here with the keys to the kingdom?”
Julianna caught Clara’s wrist mid-swing with casual, terrifying ease. She squeezed just hard enough to make Clara whimper, leaning in close so that only the two of them could hear.
“Your family built its wealth on the graves of mine, Clara,” Julianna whispered, her eyes flashing with a cold, unforgiving fire. “Twenty-five years ago, your father signed the eviction order that put my mother on the streets with a newborn baby. I’m just here to collect the interest.”
Richard grabbed Julianna’s free arm, his face twisted in desperate confusion. “What are you talking about? Your mother? Your mother was a seamstress from Ohio! Eleanor adopted you out of charity!”
Julianna slowly released Clara’s wrist, letting the blonde stumble backward into her father’s arms. She adjusted her lapel and turned her back on both of them, staring down at the empty lobby where Eleanor had just vanished into the night.

“Charity?” Julianna laughed softly, a humorless, chilling sound. “Richard, you don’t even know who your own grandfather was.”
