Chapter 9 - The Crimson Wire

The blinking red LED on the detonator accelerated into a rapid, frantic strobe, casting a rhythmic, bloody pulse across Clara’s face. Julian kept his eyes locked on hers, slowly climbing another step while calculating the distance between himself and the catwalk stairs. Every muscle in his body was coiled like a spring, ready to launch forward at the slightest hesitation.
"You think this makes you powerful, Clara?" Julian called out, his voice steady despite the adrenaline roaring in his ears. "Destroying everything won't bring your father back, and it won't give you back the years you spent living a lie."
"It gives me peace," Clara screamed back, her voice cracking under the immense weight of her unraveling sanity. "A clean slate carved out of ash!"
Down below, hidden in the shadows of the massive concrete pillar, Lily reached out with trembling fingers. Her small hands traced the thick conduit cables running down the wall from the catwalk’s emergency shutoff box—the exact electrical junction she had spotted on the facility’s schematic blueprints displayed on the wall near the entrance.
She remembered her father explaining how the old plant’s safety overrides worked during their tour of the historical museum downtown. Always look for the red manual bypass, his voice echoed in her memory.
Clara’s thumb twitched against the plastic casing of the detonator. "Say goodbye, Julian."
With a sudden burst of adrenaline, Lily grabbed a heavy iron lever attached to the junction box and pulled downward with all her weight.
CLANG.
The mechanical groan echoed violently through the cavernous facility. Instantly, the rapid blinking of the red LED on Clara’s detonator stuttered, dimmed, and died entirely.
Clara gasped, staring down at the dead plastic box in her hands in sheer disbelief. She pressed the button repeatedly, but nothing happened. The ambient hum of the facility's auxiliary generators completely cut out, plunging the upper catwalk into sudden, heavy darkness.
"What did you do?!" Clara shrieked, spinning around on the metal grating.
Julian didn't wait. He lunged up the remaining steps of the staircase three at a time, his boots slamming against the metal grating with bone-jarring force. Before Clara could turn back around, Julian collided with her, tackling her torso and pinning her against the rusted handrail of the catwalk.
The detonator slipped from her nerveless fingers, clattering loudly against the metal floor before bouncing over the edge and plunging into the dark, stagnant water far below.
Arthur reached the top of the stairs a moment later, breathing heavily, holding his iron wrench like a club just in case. He looked down at Julian, who held Clara firmly pinned against the railing as she thrashed and sobbed in defeat.
"It's over, Clara," Julian panted, his face inches from hers. "The game is finished."
Clara stopped struggling, her head sagging forward as the heavy industrial sirens of the incoming police blockade finally began to wail outside the compound.

"You think I'm the end of it?" Clara whispered, her lips curling into a dark, knowing smirk as blood trickled from a small cut on her forehead. "Marcus wasn't my partner, Julian. He was just an employee. The real buyer of your family's assets is already sitting in your boardroom."
