Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The screech of tires pulling into the gravel driveway signaled the arrival of the local authorities, cutting through the heavy, suffocating silence of the wedding venue. Julian refused to let go of Clara’s wrist, his grip ironclad despite her soft, desperate pleas for calm. Arthur stood up from his seat, his face pale and drained of all color as he watched the scene unfold with agonizing dread.

"Julian, please, you are making a terrible mistake," Clara whispered, her voice cracking with forced vulnerability. "This child is confused. Her mother had a grudge against me for years."

"Quiet, Clara," Julian replied coldly, refusing to look at her tears. "We will let the police sort out the grudges."

Lily stood steadfast beside Arthur, who placed a trembling, protective hand on the young girl's narrow shoulder. The golden chain necklace still sat exposed against Clara’s lace bodice, catching the dying light of the sunset like a mocking beacon. It was a unique piece, custom-made with interlocking links of heavy 24-karat gold, bearing an intricate insignia of a blooming magnolia flower on the clasp—a family heirloom that had belonged to Lily’s late grandmother.

Officers stepped out of their cruisers, their heavy boots crunching on the gravel. Julian stepped forward to meet them, his black tuxedo jacket fluttering in the evening wind. He pointed directly at Clara, who was now shivering violently under the weight of her veil and her cascading guilt.

"She is wearing stolen property," Julian stated flatly to the lead officer. "I want her searched, and I want an immediate investigation into the boutique where she worked."

Clara’s eyes flashed with a sudden, venomous hatred directed squarely at Lily, a micro-expression that did not escape Arthur’s watchful eyes. The older man stepped closer to the officers, clearing his throat to demand their attention.

"Officer," Arthur said firmly, "I am Arthur Vance. That necklace does not belong to her. It was stolen from my late sister’s safe on the exact night Clara was hired as an accountant."

The lead officer nodded, stepping past Julian to approach the trembling bride. Clara backed away slowly until her spine hit the heavy wooden doors of the estate, her fingers tightening desperately around the golden links at her throat.

"Ma'am, I am going to have to ask you to remove the necklace and come with us for questioning," the officer instructed, resting a hand on his utility belt.

May you like

Clara smiled—a chilling, fragile smile that didn't reach her eyes—and slowly unclasped the heavy chain before dropping it into the officer's outstretched palm.
