Chapter 5 - The Betrayal Within Glass Walls

The sleek glass-and-steel skyscraper housing Vance Enterprises stood tall against the downtown skyline, but inside executive suite 400, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Julian strode through the double glass doors, his stride purposeful and furious. Arthur walked close behind, followed by Lily, who clutched a small sketch pad tightly to her chest.
Employees scattered as Julian marched past their desks, ignoring the whispered conversations that buzzed like angry hornets. Word of Clara’s arrest had already leaked to the financial press, sending their stock into a volatile morning spiral.
Julian pushed open the heavy mahogany door to the chief financial officer’s office. Marcus Vance—Julian’s own cousin—sat calmly behind his executive desk, swirling amber liquid in a crystal tumbler.
"Julian," Marcus said smoothly, not bothering to stand up. "I heard about the wedding. A tragedy, truly. Though perhaps a blessing in disguise."
Julian slammed both palms onto the polished mahogany desk, leaning over so his face was inches from Marcus’s. "You bailed her out."
Marcus took a slow sip of his drink, his eyes devoid of remorse. "She is entitled to legal representation, cousin. We live in a society governed by due process, not emotional outbursts."
"You knew!" Julian roared, the restraint finally snapping as he grabbed Marcus by the collar of his tailored Italian suit. "You brought her into my life three years ago! You recommended her for the accounting firm, you helped her integrate into our social circle, and you signed the bail bond!"
Marcus didn’t flinch. He simply reached up and pried Julian’s fingers away from his collar with surprising strength, smoothing his lapel before looking up with a chilling smirk.
"I recognized talent when I saw it," Marcus whispered coldly. "You inherit everything just by bearing the name, Julian while the rest of us have to claw our way to the top. Clara and I understood each other. We saw an empire built on old money that was ripe for the taking."
Arthur stepped into the office, his cane tapping rhythmically against the hardwood floor. His eyes were hard like flint. "You sold out your own blood for a percentage of stolen jewelry, Marcus? The authorities are already reviewing every signature on the corporate trust accounts."
Marcus chuckled, standing up slowly and buttoning his jacket. "Let them look. Every transaction was routed through offshore shell corporations with airtight legal insulation. You can't prove a damn thing."
Suddenly, the office door swung open wide, and Detective Miller walked in flanked by two uniformed officers.

"He's right, Mr. Vance," Miller said calmly, holding up a sleek digital tablet. "We couldn't touch the offshore accounts—until ten minutes ago when Clara signed a full cooperation agreement to save herself from a twenty-year sentence, handing us the master encryption keys to every single folder Marcus holds."
