Chapter 3 - The Confession Room

The sterile fluorescent lights of the precinct interrogation room hummed a monotonous tune, casting long, harsh shadows across the metal table. Clara sat in the center of the room, her elaborate white lace wedding dress pooling awkwardly around the legs of the bolted chair. Her veil had been removed, revealing neatly styled brown hair and a face devoid of its earlier bridal perfection.

Julian stood outside the two-way mirror in the adjacent observation room, his arms crossed tightly over his chest. His black bow tie was loosened, hanging limply against his crisp white collar as he watched the woman he thought he knew stare blankly at the table.

Arthur stood beside him, clutching a worn leather folder containing decades-old family records and police reports from the original burglary.

"She is building a mental wall," Arthur murmured, his voice heavy with exhaustion. "Clara is far more calculated than she lets on, Julian. That sweetness was an act designed to infiltrate your life."

Inside the room, Detective Miller slid a clear plastic evidence bag containing the heavy gold chain across the metal table. The interlocking links clinked softly against the steel surface.

"Do you want to tell us how a family heirloom belonging to the Vance estate ended up in your personal locker at the country club, Ms. Hayes?" Detective Miller asked, leaning forward with his elbows on the table.

Clara looked up, her eyes remarkably dry. The panic from the garden had vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating facade. "I found it," she said softly, her voice steady and devoid of hesitation. "Someone dropped it in the parking lot months ago. I didn't know who it belonged to."

Outside, Julian slammed his fist against the observation glass, the muffled thud echoing in the small room. "She's lying! That safe was inside a locked private study!"

Detective Miller pressed on, sliding a printed photograph across the table. It showed a bank deposit slip bearing Clara’s signature, dated three days after the burglary, matching the exact value of liquidated diamonds that had been housed alongside the gold chain.

"That doesn't explain the fifty thousand dollars deposited into your private account the very next morning," Miller noted, his tone turning sharp.

Clara’s lips parted slightly, and for a fraction of a second, her composure fractured as she realized the depth of the trap closing around her.
