Chapter 14 - The Final Verdict

The grand courtroom of the municipal district was packed to capacity, the murmurs of reporters and spectators filling the vaulted chamber like the buzzing of a hive. The heavy oak doors remained propped open as Judge Thomas took his seat behind the high mahogany bench, adjusting his glasses as he surveyed the densely filled room.
Julian sat at the plaintiff's table, wearing a crisp black suit and a subdued dark tie. Arthur sat to his right, while Lily sat quietly beside Arthur, resting her small sketch pad on her knees. Across the aisle, Victoria sat flanked by two court-appointed public defenders, her charcoal-gray suit looking slightly rumpled after weeks in holding.
"The court is now in session in the matter of the State versus Victoria Vance and Clara Hayes," Judge Thomas announced, his deep voice carrying clearly across the silent courtroom. "Counsel, we have reviewed the submitted evidence, the decrypted financial logs from Magnolia Holdings, and the newly unsealed toxicology reports regarding the late estate patriarch."
Detective Miller stepped forward from the gallery, placing the original family deed, the gold chain necklaces, and the signed confessions neatly on the clerk's podium.
"Your Honor," the prosecuting attorney began, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "The state has established a clear, premeditated pattern of corporate espionage, embezzlement, grand larceny, and felony-grade conspiracy spanning over a decade, orchestrated by the defendant, Victoria Vance, with the direct complicity of Clara Hayes."
Victoria did not flinch as the charges were read aloud. She stared straight ahead at the walnut paneling of the courtroom wall, her expression an unreadable mask of stoic detachment.
When the prosecution rested, Judge Thomas turned his gaze toward the defense table. "Does the defense wish to make a closing statement?"
Victoria’s public defender stood up nervously, shuffling a stack of papers. "Your Honor, given our client's full cooperation with the recovery of assets and the voluntary surrender of offshore accounts, we ask the court for leniency..."
Before the lawyer could finish, Victoria raised a single gloved hand, signaling him to sit down. The courtroom fell instantly dead silent.
Victoria stood up slowly, smoothing the front of her jacket. She looked around the room, her eyes briefly passing over Julian, Arthur, and finally resting on young Lily in the front row.
"There is no need for leniency, Your Honor," Victoria said, her voice steady, clear, and echoing off the vaulted ceiling. "The accounts are returned, the estate is restored, and the books are finally balanced. I entered this world chasing an empire that was never mine to claim, and I leave it with exactly what I earned."
Judge Thomas nodded slowly, his expression grave. "Victoria Vance, on the charges of conspiracy, financial fraud, and corporate malfeasance, this court sentences you to twenty-five years to life without the possibility of parole in the state penitentiary. Clara Hayes, for her direct role in the theft and extortion conspiracy, is sentenced to fifteen years."
The heavy strike of the judge’s gavel echoed through the chamber like a gunshot, signaling the definitive end of an empire built on deception.

Julian closed his eyes, drawing a deep, cleansing breath as the suffocating weight that had pressed down on his chest since the wedding day finally, mercifully lifted.
