Chapter 9

The afternoon sun was interrupted by a sharp knock on the front door, breaking the quiet afternoon routine Clara had tried to establish with Leo. Setting her book aside, she walked down the hallway and opened the door to find Master Sergeant Davis standing on the porch. He was out of uniform, wearing a simple flannel shirt and jeans, holding a small cardboard box taped shut with packing tape. His weathered face held a mixture of deep sorrow and respectful hesitation. "Clara," he said softly, tipping his head in greeting. "I hope Im not intruding, but I brought some personal effects from Marks footlocker at the barracks. The command thought you should have them directly." Clara felt a cold knot form in her stomach, but she nodded and stepped aside, inviting him in. Sergeant Davis stepped into the entryway, carefully setting the box down on the small wooden console table. He looked down the hallway, spotting Leo sitting on the living room rug, still keeping close watch over the combat boot. Davis let out a quiet sigh, his eyes reflecting the painful memories of the deployment they had shared. "Mark was a good man, Clara. The best squad leader Ive ever served with. He talked about you and Leo every single day we were out there." Clara felt tears prick her eyes once more, but she managed a grateful smile, thanking him for his kindness and for making the long drive to deliver the box. After a brief conversation about nothing in particular, Davis excused himself, leaving Clara alone with the physical remnants of her husbands final months. She stared at the cardboard box, knowing that opening it would release a floodgate of emotions, yet feeling an irresistible pull to discover whatever last pieces of Mark were hidden inside.
