Chapter 14

The first heavy winter snow blanketed the neighborhood overnight, transforming the suburban street into a pristine, silent wonderland of white. When Leo woke up the next morning, he immediately ran to the bedroom window, pressing his small hands against the cold glass in sheer delight at the sparkling landscape outside. Clara bundled him up in a thick blue snowsuit, wrapping a matching wool scarf around his neck before stepping out onto the front porch. The air was biting and crisp, filling their lungs with an invigorating chill. Leo knelt in the deep snow on the front lawn, carefully placing the military combat boot upright in a fresh drift as if inviting his father to join them in the winter wonderland. Clara watched him with a gentle, bittersweet smile, touched by the enduring innocence of his gesture. "Look, Mommy, daddy's snow," Leo exclaimed, pointing at the white flakes still drifting down from the gray sky. Clara walked over and knelt beside her son in the snow, pulling him into a warm embrace. Together, they built a small snow sculpture right next to the combat boot, decorating it with a carrot nose and two small pinecones for buttons. For the first time in months, the memory of Mark did not bring an immediate wave of crushing sorrow, but rather a warm, comforting glow of gratitude for the years they had shared. The stark reality of his absence remained, but it was now balanced by the vibrant life blossoming right beside her in the form of their fearless, loving son. They stayed outside until their cheeks were rosy and their fingers cold, laughing together as the snow continued to fall gently around them, blessing the quiet morning with a sense of renewal.
