Chapter 10

With a pair of kitchen scissors in hand, Clara carefully sliced through the heavy brown packing tape sealing Marks footlocker box. Leo abandoned his spot on the rug for a moment, crawling over to investigate the new object with cautious curiosity. As Clara lifted the cardboard flaps, the distinct scent of canvas, gun oil, and laundry detergent drifted out, an olfactory ghost of the man she loved. Inside rested a folded uniform blouse, a few paperback books with dog-eared pages, a small silver pocket knife, and a worn leather photo album. Clara reached in slowly, lifting the photo album first. She opened the cover to find candid snapshots of their life together before the deployment: beach trips, birthdays, quiet Sunday mornings, and selfies Mark had taken on his phone during training exercises. The last few pages held recent photographs sent from overseas—dusty landscapes, smiling Marines in tactical gear, and a polaroid of Mark holding a handwritten sign that said Missing my favorite boy. Leos small finger reached out and touched the polaroid, tracing the image of his father's face. "Daddy," Leo whispered, his voice steady this time, filled with a quiet, heartbreaking recognition rather than frantic panic. Clara pulled him onto her lap, turning the pages slowly as they looked at the pictures together. It was a bittersweet communion with the past, reminding them that while Mark was gone, the love they shared was permanent and untouchable. They spent an hour going through every item in the box, treating each trinket like a sacred relic of a life cut too short, finding unexpected comfort in the shared memories.
