Chapter 8

Sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains of the kitchen, casting pale, golden shafts across the linoleum floor. Clara stood by the counter, staring blankly at the empty coffee maker. The silence of the early morning was broken only by the soft, rhythmic patter of small footsteps padding down the stairs. A moment later, Leo appeared in the doorway, wearing his favorite dinosaur pajamas and dragging the heavy combat boot behind him by its frayed laces. He looked up at her with solemn, dark-rimmed eyes, the remnants of yesterday's sorrow still shadowing his young face. Clara knelt immediately, opening her arms, and Leo walked right into her embrace, burying his face in the crook of her neck. "Good morning, sweet boy," she whispered, her voice rough with sleep and unspent tears. Leo did not speak; he merely clung to her, his small body warm and alive against hers. It was this tactile presence that reminded Clara she had a reason to keep moving forward. She stood up, carrying him on her hip while he held the boot in his free hand, and poured herself a cup of black coffee. They sat together at the kitchen table, the quiet morning stretching out before them like an untamed wilderness. Clara knew that friends and family would be dropping by today with casseroles, cards, and well-meaning words, but for this brief hour, the house belonged only to the two of them. She looked down at the boot resting on the chair next to Leo and realized they needed to establish a new routine, one that honored Marks memory without letting grief paralyze their daily lives. It would be a slow, agonizing process, but looking at Leos resilient eyes, she knew they would find a way to survive the storm together.
