Chapter 5

The precision of the two Marines folding the flag was mesmerizing in its geometric perfection. Fold by fold, the bright red and white stripes vanished until only the field of blue and white stars remained visible. Leo watched the movement with wide, tear-filled eyes, still clutching the heavy combat boot that his father had worn on countless training exercises before deploying. The senior Marine knelt before Clara, holding the folded flag with both white-gloved hands, his expression a mask of professional stoicism mixed with profound personal empathy. He tilted his head slightly in a gesture of utmost respect as he spoke the traditional words of gratitude on behalf of a grateful nation. Clara reached out with trembling hands to accept the heavy burden, her fingers brushing against the crisp cotton. As the flag transferred to her arms, the physical weight of it seemed to mirror the emotional burden she now carried entirely alone. She nodded mutely, unable to form words, her throat tight with suppressed anguish. Leos small hand reached out, tentatively touching the corner of the flag before pulling back and grabbing the boot once more. The Marine stood at attention, saluted Clara one last time, and smartly stepped back to rejoin the formation. The immediate family members began to step forward, offering embraces of support, their whispers of comfort barely registering in Claras overwhelmed mind. She stood there on the grass, holding the folded flag in one arm and steadying her weeping toddler with the other, anchored only by the love they had shared and the memories that would have to last a lifetime. The cemetery was slowly beginning to empty, leaving the family to confront the quiet reality of the long journey home.
