Chapter 8

The heavy oak doors of the Sterling Corporation headquarters loomed over the plaza like the entrance to an impenetrable fortress. Inside the executive suite on the forty-fifth floor, Arthur Sterling stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking out over the sprawling, illuminated skyline of the city. A crystal tumbler of scotch rested in his hand, the amber liquid untouched and warm.
The private elevator chime signaled an arrival, and the heavy mahogany doors slid open silently. Arthur did not turn around; he didn't need to. The measured, deliberate cadence of the footsteps approaching across the plush Persian rug belonged to only one person.
Victoria Vance walked into the office uninvited, her dark grey blazer immaculate, her posture as straight and unyielding as a marble pillar. She stopped ten feet behind Arthur, her hands clasped lightly in front of her. She carried no folder this time, needing no physical evidence to command the room.
"The federal prosecutors have accepted the preliminary audit," Victoria stated, her voice cutting through the ambient hum of the climate-control system. "By tomorrow morning, federal arrest warrants will be issued for both Marcus and Chloe for corporate fraud, asset concealment, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny."
Arthur took a slow sip of his scotch, the ice cube clinking softly against the rim of the glass. He didn't express surprise, nor did he offer sympathy. His face was a mask of cold, weathered granite. "You move quickly, Victoria," he murmured, his voice sounding older and more tired than it had in the parking garage. "I always knew you possessed a sharp mind for business, but this... this was surgical."
"When a tumor metastasizes, you don't negotiate with it, Arthur," Victoria replied smoothly. "You excise it completely to ensure the survival of the host."
Arthur turned slowly to face her, his sharp eyes meeting her steady, unblinking gaze. There was no warmth between them, but there was a profound, begrudging respect forged in the shared destruction of their common enemies. "And what happens to my daughter?" Arthur asked, the question hanging heavily in the air between them. "She made a catastrophic mistake, but she is still my blood."
"Chloe made a conscious choice," Victoria corrected gently, her tone devoid of malice yet absolute in its finality. "She chose to align herself with a parasite, and she chose to help him siphon millions from your legacy while actively plotting my displacement. She will face the courts just like Marcus. Shielding her now would only invite further rot into the corporation."
Arthur looked away, staring back out at the glittering skyline. He knew she was right. If he intervened, the board would force him out, and the scandal would consume the entire Sterling empire. He had spent forty years building a financial dynasty, and he would not allow two reckless, entitled individuals to tear it down from the inside.

"The board room is yours tomorrow at nine," Arthur said quietly, conceding the final piece of tactical ground. "The restructuring committee has already drafted the transfer of Marcus’s executive shares into your name. You are officially the largest minority stakeholder in Sterling Corporation."
Victoria offered a thin, cool smile. "Thank you, Arthur. I intend to ensure the company remains profitable—and entirely secure." She turned on her heel and walked back toward the elevator, her dark grey suit blending seamlessly into the shadows of the executive suite as the doors slid open to grant her passage.
