Chapter 10

The morning sun broke over the financial district, casting long, sharp shadows across the polished glass and steel facades of the city's corporate towers. Inside the primary boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of the Sterling Corporation, an eerie silence hung in the air. The long mahogany conference table was surrounded by twelve members of the board of directors, their expressions grim and focused as they reviewed the thick dossiers placed before them.

At the head of the table sat Arthur Sterling, looking older and more careworn than he had days prior. To his immediate right sat Victoria Vance. She wore a charcoal-grey pantsuit today, paired with her signature sleek bun and a quiet, terrifying confidence that commanded the entire room without her having to utter a single word.

The heavy oak doors opened quietly, and corporate security guards escorted Marcus Vance into the room. He looked a shadow of his former self; his dark grey shirt was unwashed and rumpled, his hair unbrushed, and dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes. He had spent the night sleeping on a park bench after his credit cards were permanently canceled and his temporary shelter options vanished.

Marcus stumbled slightly as he reached the foot of the table, his eyes darting frantically around the room until they landed on Victoria. A flash of pure, unadulterated hatred crossed his features, quickly replaced by a desperate, pathetic plea.

"Arthur, you can't let them do this," Marcus stammered, his voice cracking as he gripped the back of an empty chair for support. "This is a hostile takeover! Victoria is manipulating the board to seize my executive shares!"

Arthur did not look up from the dossier resting on the mahogany surface. He turned a page slowly, the sound cutting sharply through the absolute silence of the room. "Sit down, Marcus," Arthur commanded, his voice devoid of any familial or professional warmth.

Marcus hesitated, then collapsed heavily into the chair, his muscular frame trembling slightly with exhaustion and panic. He looked around the table, but not a single director would meet his gaze. They all stared down at their documents, silently acknowledging the irrefutable proof of his systematic embezzlement.

Victoria leaned forward slightly, resting her manicured fingertips on the polished wood. Her eyes locked onto Marcus with the cold, calculating precision of a surgeon holding a scalpel.

"You didn't just embezzle corporate funds, Marcus," Victoria began, her voice carrying clear and steady across the massive room. "You systematically liquidated four subsidiary accounts, funneled the capital through offshore shell companies in the Caymans, and used corporate assets to finance a lifestyle of deception. Every transfer has been tracked, timestamped, and legally verified by federal investigators."

Marcus slammed his hand down onto the mahogany table, the loud thud echoing off the high ceiling. "You planned this!" he snarled, abandoning all pretense of professional decorum. "You knew about the accounts for months and you just sat back, waiting to destroy me!"

"I simply allowed you enough rope to hang yourself," Victoria replied, her voice remaining perfectly even, entirely unfazed by his outburst. "Greed always blinds the intellect, Marcus. You believed yourself untouchable because you mistook my silence for ignorance. That was your fatal error."

Arthur finally raised his head, looking across the table at the man who had betrayed both his daughter and his company. "The board has voted unanimously," Arthur stated coldly. "Your shares are forfeited, your employment is terminated with cause, and your corporate credentials are revoked effective immediately. Federal marshals are waiting downstairs to take you into custody."

Before Marcus could lunge across the table, two security guards stepped forward, their massive hands closing firmly around his shoulders. They hoisted him out of the chair with brutal efficiency, dragging him backward toward the heavy mahogany doors as Marcus screamed curses into the quiet boardroom. The heavy doors slammed shut behind him, sealing his fate forever.
