Chapter 5

The hum of the sedan’s idling engine provided a low, rhythmic background noise to the suffocating silence of the parking garage. Marcus remained crouched on the concrete, his hands resting limply on his knees, staring at the floor where the scattered foreign currency lay mixed with dust and broken glass. The illusion of their grand escape had evaporated completely, replaced by the harsh, unrelenting reality of their complete exposure.
Chloe pulled herself up from the side of the car, using the door handle for support. Her beige strapless dress was ruined, smeared with gray concrete dust and oil stains. Her long blonde hair, once perfectly styled, now hung in tangled strands across her face. She cast a venomous, albeit entirely powerless, glare down at Marcus. "This is all your fault," she whispered, her voice hoarse from crying. "You swore she wouldn't find out about the offshore transfers."
Marcus let out a harsh, broken laugh that lacked any humor. He pushed himself up from the ground, his muscular frame unsteady for a brief second before he regained his balance. "My fault?" Marcus sneered, his anger flaring up one last time before dying out entirely. "You were the one who insisted we keep the cash reserves in a public storage unit instead of a secure bank account. You wanted the physical thrill of it."
Arthur ignored their bickering entirely. He stood beside his own vehicle parked a few spaces away, his fingers working the buttons of his dark suit jacket as he prepared to leave. He pulled out his smartphone, dialing a direct extension to the Sterling Corporation’s legal department. The call connected on the first ring.
"Cancel all secondary corporate credit lines associated with Chloe Sterling and Marcus Vance," Arthur instructed, his voice ringing with absolute, unyielding authority. "And instruct our compliance officer to cooperate fully with Victoria Vance’s legal team regarding the forensic audit. I want every transaction from the past three years laid bare."
Chloe gasped as she overheard her father’s words, realizing that she was not just being cut off socially; she was being systematically erased from the family empire. She took a staggering step toward Arthur, but he slipped into his car, pulled the door shut with a heavy thud, and locked the doors from the inside. Through the tinted glass, Chloe could see his stern, impassive face illuminated briefly by the dashboard lights before the vehicle pulled away, its tires hissing against the damp concrete.

Left alone in the cavernous garage, Chloe and Marcus stood in the dim light like two ghosts haunting a ruin they had built with their own hands. The black vanity case lay open at their feet, its gold zipper glinting mockingly in the shadows—a useless relic of a conspiracy that had collapsed before it could even begin.
Marcus turned away from Chloe without a word, heading toward the concrete stairwell that led up to the street level. He did not look back, and Chloe did not call out to him. The partnership forged in deceit had dissolved the moment pressure was applied. Chloe sank back down against the side of the idling sedan, wrapping her arms tightly around herself as the cold draft swept through the pillars, her tears finally running dry as the full, terrifying solitude of her new reality set in.
