Chapter 7

Marcus Vance walked through the bustling downtown pedestrian district like a man swimming upstream against a relentless tide of indifferent strangers. The neon lights of high-end boutiques and luxury car dealerships blurred around him into dizzying streaks of color. His dark grey button-down shirt was still torn at the shoulder, a stark visual indicator of his sudden fall from grace.

He reached into his back pocket instinctively, pulling out his leather wallet to check for emergency cash, but found only three crumpled one-dollar bills and a collection of expired membership cards. His credit cards had all been declined within minutes of Arthur’s corporate directive, leaving him entirely cut off from the lifestyle he had taken for granted. The realization hit him with the force of a physical blow—he was completely broke, stranded in the heart of the city with no car, no home, and no allies.

He pulled out his smartphone, his thumb hovering over Chloe’s contact name before he remembered that her phone had likely been confiscated or disconnected by her father’s security team. He tried dialing anyways, listening to the hollow, endless ringing tone until an automated voice informed him that the subscriber was unavailable. Marcus cursed under his breath, tossing his phone onto a concrete bench as if the device itself were to blame for his catastrophic ruin.

Across the crowded plaza, a large digital billboard flickered, broadcasting the daily financial news. The headline flashing in bold red letters across the screen caught Marcus’s eye: STERLING CORPORATION ANNOUNCES EMERGENCY AUDIT; INTERNAL EMBEZZLEMENT INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED. Beneath the headline, a still photograph of the corporate headquarters dominated the screen, accompanied by a smaller inset photo of Victoria Vance stepping out of a federal building with her trademark sleek bun and unwavering, stern expression.

Marcus stared up at the billboard, his mouth slightly open as the reporters detailed the sweeping fallout of the investigation. The news anchor explicitly mentioned that all accounts tied to the shell companies had been frozen by court order, thanks to comprehensive legal documentation provided by Victoria Vance. The humiliation was absolute; his betrayal had been broadcast to millions of investors, partners, and colleagues in a matter of hours.

A sharp gust of wind swept across the plaza, carrying the chill of the approaching evening. Marcus shivered, pulling the torn fabric of his shirt tighter across his chest. He realized then that he couldn't go back to the apartment—the locks were changed, and security was likely waiting to serve him with criminal summons. He couldn't go to Chloe, and he certainly couldn't face Arthur Sterling. For the first time in his adult life, Marcus Vance was entirely alone, facing a future stripped of every luxury he had schemed to acquire.

He turned his back on the glowing billboard and began walking again, his head bowed against the wind, heading aimlessly toward the darker, quieter alleys on the edge of the financial district. The predator had become the prey, and the city offered no shelter for the fallen.
