Chapter 9

The hollow echo of heavy boots descending the concrete stairwell sent a jolt of pure adrenaline through the small underground terminal. Elena grabbed Leo by the shoulder, pulling the boy behind a massive concrete pillar that supported the weight of the bus station above. Clara froze in place, her golden satin top catching the dim flicker of a dying fluorescent light tube overhead, making her an easy target for whoever was hunting them in the gloom.
"Hide!" Elena hissed, pushing Clara behind the row of rusted lockers.
Clara scrambled into the narrow gap between the wall and the metal units, pulling her grey pants tight against her legs to avoid making a sound. Elena knelt beside Leo, holding the leather briefcase tightly in one hand while whispering words of comfort into her son's ear.
"Stay quiet, Leo. Don't make a single sound, no matter what you hear," Elena whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
A tall figure rounded the corner of the stairwell, casting a long, distorted shadow across the damp floor. The man wore a dark security uniform without any identifying badges, his right hand resting casually near the holstered baton at his belt. He paused at the landing, shining a heavy-duty tactical flashlight back and forth across the vacant rows of lockers.
The beam of light swept past Clara's hiding spot, illuminating the shimmering gold fabric of her top for a fraction of a second. The security guard stopped, lowering the flashlight and taking three slow, deliberate steps toward the lockers.
"I know someone's down here," the guard called out, his voice bouncing off the concrete walls with an eerie resonance. "Property management wants those documents back. Hand them over quietly, and nobody gets hurt."
Elena's mind raced. There was no other exit from this subterranean level except the stairs the guard was currently blocking. If they tried to run past him, Leo would be entirely exposed. She looked down at the heavy leather briefcase in her grip, wondering if tossing it out as a distraction would buy them enough time to slip away through the old maintenance tunnels behind the lockers.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the opposite end of the basement—a discarded soda can rolling across the floor, creating a clatter that drew the guard's attention away from Clara's hiding spot.
"Who's there?" the guard barked, spinning around and aiming his flashlight toward the dark shadows near the loading dock doors.

From the darkness of the maintenance corridor, a figure stepped out, leaning heavily against the wall for support. It was Julian. His face was bruised, and his work shirt was torn at the shoulder, but his eyes burned with fierce determination as he held up a heavy iron pipe in his good hand.
"Looking for me?" Julian called out, coughing slightly as he braced himself for the confrontation.
