Chapter 12

The orange glow of the flames lit up the night sky over Maplewood, casting long, dancing shadows against the brick facade of the property management building. Sirens wailed in the distance as two red fire engines pulled up to the curb, their heavy hoses unspooled with practiced efficiency while thick plumes of grey smoke billowed out from the shattered ground-floor windows.

Elena, Julian, Leo, and Investigator Miller arrived in Miller’s unmarked sedan just as the first wave of firefighters rushed through the front glass doors with oxygen masks and heavy axes.

"They're destroying the physical ledgers!" Julian shouted over the roar of the fire and the wailing sirens. "Arthur knew we were coming for them!"

Miller pulled out his radio, barking orders to the surrounding perimeter units. "Lock down all exits! Make sure nobody leaves the service alley behind the building. Vanguard is trying to purge the paper trail before our warrants clear!"

Elena gripped Leo's hand tightly, shielding the boy's face from the acrid smell of burning paper and melting plastic that drifted across the parking lot. Clara stood a few feet away, trembling in the autumn chill as she watched the destruction she had indirectly enabled. The golden satin top was smudged with soot from the smoke drifting in the air, a fitting symbol of how quickly her ambitious shortcuts had burned to ash.

"Look!" Leo cried out, pointing toward the side service alley behind the burning building.

A tall figure in a light blue button-down shirt—his sleeves rolled up and his tie hanging loosely around his neck—was hurrying toward a silver sedan parked near the dumpsters. It was Arthur. He was clutching a large cardboard box filled with yellowed folders and financial binders, desperate to escape before the perimeter officers closed in.

"That's him! That's Arthur!" Elena yelled, pointing toward the alley.

Julian didn't hesitate. Despite his injured shoulder and bruised ribs, he bolted across the asphalt, sprinting past the fire hoses and heading straight for the service alley to cut off the clerk's escape route.

Miller drew his service weapon, holding it down at his side as he followed close behind. "Stop right there! Police!"

Arthur froze with his hand on the door handle of his silver sedan, turning around slowly with a look of frantic desperation on his face. The smoke behind him billowed into the night sky, framing the corrupt clerk against a backdrop of his own making.

"You're too late," Arthur sneered, dropping the box of folders onto the pavement where several documents caught the edge of a burning ember and began to smolder. "The digital files are backed up to an offshore server you can't touch. You've got nothing!"

May you like

Julian closed the distance between them in three long strides, his hand shooting out to grab Arthur by the collar of his light blue shirt before the clerk could slide into his car.

"We've got you," Julian said coldly, slamming Arthur against the side of the vehicle with a dull thud.
