Chapter 1

The harsh fluorescent lighting of the Maplewood Property Management office hummed with an irritating constancy, casting a sterile pallor over the linoleum floor. Elena Vance stood rigidly at the main reception counter, her beige silk blouse slightly damp from the autumn drizzle outside, her brown hair pulled back into a sharp, uncompromising ponytail. Her face burned with righteous fury, her jaw locked as she stared down the clerk behind the desk. Just a few feet away, her sister-in-law, Clara Holloway, stood draped in a shimmering golden satin top and tailored grey pants, arms crossed over her chest, glaring back with a look of pure, unadulterated contempt.

Elena slammed her palm against the formica counter, the sharp sound echoing through the quiet office where a few anxious tenants sat waiting on plastic chairs.

"She should because she never pays rent!" Elena shouted, her voice cracking slightly with pent-up frustration.

Clara sneered, her lips parting to reveal a cold, mocking smile.

"You love playing the victim, don't you, Elena?" Clara retorted, her voice dripping with venom. "You are just bitter because the lease is in my name and you couldn't afford a studio apartment on your own salary."

"My salary isn't the issue, and you know it!" Elena fired back, leaning over the counter. "You missed three payments and you are trying to pin it on my brother's business account!"

"Keep screaming, everyone is watching," Clara whispered maliciously, her eyes flashing.

Arthur, the young clerk, sighed heavily and pushed a thick manila folder across the desk. The bold red ink of a stamp read "PAID" in capital letters, right beside a neat, unmistakable signature. Next to the folder lay a gleaming set of brass apartment keys. Ten-year-old Leo, standing beside Elena in his bright tie-dye shirt, looked up at his mother with wide, terrified eyes, clutching a cardboard moving box tightly against his chest.

Arthur cleared his throat, breaking the heavy tension in the room.

"She is fully paid," Arthur stated calmly. "Your complaint was false."

Elena stared down at the desk in absolute disbelief, her mind racing as she realized the signature on the paid receipt was forged in her own brother's handwriting.
