Chapter 11

The downtown district attorney's office was quiet and brightly lit, smelling of fresh printer toner and old paper archives. A young night duty investigator named Miller sat behind a cluttered metal desk, reviewing the contents of the leather briefcase that Julian had slammed down onto the blotter. Inside lay the flash drive containing Project Echo, the fraudulent property transfer agreements, and the signed Maplewood management letters bearing Arthur's authentic signature.
Investigator Miller adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, looking from the documents up to Julian, whose bruised face bore silent witness to the danger they had just escaped.
"This is a massive paper trail," Miller said, plugging the flash drive into his secure terminal. "Arthur Harrison has been operating under the radar for three years, fronting for a shell corporation called Vanguard Holdings. If these files verify, we've got enough evidence for immediate warrants on conspiracy, extortion, and fraudulent eviction."
Elena stood behind the desk, her hand resting on Leo's shoulder while Clara sat quietly on a wooden bench near the door, staring down at her polished fingernails in profound shame.
"They were planning to bulldoze our apartment building by Monday morning," Elena explained, her voice steady and resolute. "They forged my brother's signature on lease termination forms and threatened us to keep quiet."
Miller clicked a few keys on his keyboard, and a series of green authorization prompts flashed across his monitor. "The encryption on this drive matches internal city council seals. Your brother did exceptional work getting this out, Mr. Vance. Most people would have just run."
"I couldn't run," Julian said, wincing as he shifted his injured shoulder. "That building is where my family lives. My nephew grew up there."
Miller nodded approvingly, reaching for his desk phone to coordinate with the tactical unit. "We're going to execute a search warrant on the Maplewood Property Management office right now. We'll pick up Arthur and anyone else involved before they have a chance to shred the physical ledgers."
Clara stood up from the bench, her voice trembling slightly. "Can I... can I go home now?"
Julian turned to look at her, his expression devoid of warmth. "You can go wherever you want, Clara. But you're going to have to explain your role in this to the investigators when they question the Vanguard associates tomorrow morning. Your signature is on the secondary commission contracts, too."
Clara swallowed hard, the golden satin top suddenly feeling like a prison uniform as she realized there was no easy way out of the mess she had helped create.

Just as Investigator Miller picked up his receiver to dispatch the tactical team, his office door burst open, and a breathless police officer rushed inside holding a portable radio crackling with static.
"Sir, we've got a Code Red at the Maplewood Property Management office," the officer announced urgently. "Someone just set fire to the archives room."
