Chapter 13

The cold metal of the handcuffs clicked around Arthur’s wrists with a sharp, definitive sound that cut through the background roar of the burning archives room. Julian kept his grip firm on the clerk's shoulder until Investigator Miller stepped forward, sliding his badge back into his coat pocket while reading Arthur his Miranda rights with calm professionalism.

"Arthur Harrison, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, arson, and extortion," Miller stated clearly, patting down the clerk's pockets and retrieving a ring of master keys and a secondary smartphone. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

Arthur didn't struggle. The frantic defiance he had shown moments earlier had completely evaporated, replaced by a sullen, defeated silence as he stared down at the smoldering folders scattered across the asphalt.

"You think stopping me changes anything?" Arthur muttered bitterly as Miller guided him toward the back of the patrol car that had just pulled up alongside the alley. "Vanguard Holdings has lawyers in three different states. You'll never trace the parent accounts."

"We don't need to trace them," Julian replied, stepping forward with the flash drive in his hand. "The encryption keys on this drive give us direct access to the primary ledger. Your shell company is done, Arthur."

Elena walked over, holding Leo's hand as the firefighters finally managed to bring the indoor blaze under control with a high-pressure foam stream. The acrid smell of smoke was still thick in the air, but for the first time in weeks, the heavy weight of uncertainty seemed to lift from Elena's shoulders.

Clara approached them slowly, her head bowed and her hands clenched tightly together. The golden satin top was ruined by soot, and her mascara had run down her cheeks in dark streaks.

"I'm sorry," Clara whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the fire engines. "I know saying that doesn't fix anything, but... I'm truly sorry for what I put you and Leo through."

Elena looked at her sister-in-law for a long moment, seeing the genuine remorse etched into Clara's face. The anger that had fueled her days ago had burned away, leaving behind only the weary grace of someone who had survived a storm.

"You made terrible choices, Clara," Elena said softly. "And you're going to have to face the legal consequences with the DA's office tomorrow. But you're still family. If you want to rebuild your life honestly after this, you won't have to do it alone."

Clara wiped a tear from her cheek, nodding slowly as the police cruiser carrying Arthur pulled away from the curb with its red and blue lights flashing against the darkened brick walls.

The battle for their home was finally over, but the most important part—putting their lives back together—was only just beginning.
