Chapter 8

The realization hit Elena like a physical blow. Arthur was not just a low-level desk clerk processing routine paperwork; he was the administrative anchor for a massive, fraudulent property scheme operating right out from under the Maplewood city council. The legal documents inside the briefcase detailed illegal zoning variances that allowed luxury high-rise developers to bulldoze low-income housing blocks—including the very building where Elena and Leo lived.

"Arthur," Elena murmured, clenching the Maplewood letterhead tightly in her fist. "He stamped that lease 'PAID' not because Julian settled his account, but to cover up the fact that the building was already sold out from under us."

Clara dropped onto a nearby wooden bench, her head in her hands as the veneer of her polished life completely shattered.

"The luxury development firm... they promised me a managerial position and a commission if I helped push the tenants out," Clara confessed, her voice muffled by her manicured fingers. "They said nobody would get hurt, Elena! They just needed the building cleared before the quarterly audit next Monday!"

Leo looked up, his young face confused and betrayed. "Aunt Clara, you wanted us to lose our home?"

Clara couldn't look the boy in the eye. She just sat there shivering in her golden top, realizing too late that she had traded her family's loyalty for corporate promises that were never going to be honored.

Elena closed the briefcase and buckled the clasps. She slid Julian's broken silver watch into her pocket alongside the flash drive. The threat demanding a midnight meeting at the old lumber yard was clear, and she knew she couldn't go to the local police—not when half the precinct was suspected of being on the developer's payroll.

"We're going to Julian's workshop first," Elena said, her voice steady and resolute as she took Leo's hand again.

Clara stood up quickly, stumbling slightly on her high heels. "You can't go there alone! Arthur works with men who don't care who gets hurt to protect their investments!"

"Then you're coming with us," Elena said coldly, fixing Clara with an unyielding stare. "You helped start this fire, Clara. Now you're going to help us put it out."

Before Clara could refuse, a sharp sound echoed from the top of the stairwell—the heavy clunk of combat boots hitting the concrete floor.

Someone was coming down the stairs after them, and judging by the heavy, deliberate pace, they weren't friendly.
