Chapter 7: A Fractured Bond

Back in the grand library, Alex stared blankly out the window as twilight painted the sky in bruised shades of purple and orange. The manila folder containing Hailey’s betrayal lay open on the desk before him, its contents feeling heavier than lead. The door opened softly, and Julian walked in, carrying a fresh cup of tea.

"Drink this," Julian said, placing the cup within Alex’s reach.

Alex didn't move for a long moment, then slowly reached out, wrapping his cold fingers around the warm ceramic. "How did I not see it, Julian? You've worked for my family for twenty years. Did you know?"

Julian pulled up a chair and sat down, his expression calm and sympathetic. "I suspected from the beginning. People who enter this family with sudden, overwhelming affection usually want something specific. But it wasn't my place to interfere until concrete evidence surfaced."

"Grandmother says I lack wisdom," Alex said bitterly, staring into the dark tea. "She thinks I'm a liability to the Kingston name."

"Your grandmother loves you in her own way, Alex," Julian replied steadily. "She survived a world that tried to destroy her at every turn. Trust, to her, is not a given emotion—it is a currency earned through loyalty and time. You gave it away too cheaply, but that does not make you a liability. It makes you human. The question is what you do now."

Alex turned his head, looking at the older man. "What would you do?"

"I would pick up the pieces, accept the hard lesson, and step into the role your family needs you to fill," Julian said without hesitation. "The Kingston conglomerate employs tens of thousands of people globally. Their livelihoods depend on this family's strength. It is time to stop mourning a lie and start protecting the legacy."

Alex took a deep breath, feeling the last remnants of his childish naivety evaporate into the cool evening air. He set the tea cup down, squared his shoulders, and nodded slowly.
