Chapter 2: Shadows in the Library

The morning sun filtered through the towering stained-glass windows of the Kingston library, casting fractured patterns of red and blue across the mahogany floorboards. Eleanor sat behind a massive oak desk, reviewing the financial reports that had accumulated during her absence. The wound on her leg throbbed dully—a constant, painful reminder of the night Hailey had tried to eliminate her. Despite the pain, Eleanor’s posture remained rigid and unyielding.

Julian entered quietly, holding a leather-bound ledger and a cup of black coffee. He placed the cup gently on the corner of the desk before pulling out a high-backed leather chair.

"The security audit for the eastern wing is complete," Julian said, his voice low and measured. "Every digital footprint Hailey left has been isolated. Her offshore accounts have been frozen pending federal review."

Eleanor took a slow sip of the coffee, her dark eyes scanning the columns of numbers. "And Alex? Has he asked about her?"

Julian hesitated for a fraction of a second, a micro-expression of pity crossing his otherwise stoic features. "He is still in the guest wing. He refuses to eat. He insists that Hailey was manipulated by outside forces, that she truly cared for him beneath the schemes."

Eleanor sighed, setting the cup down with a sharp click. "Alex has always possessed a dangerous weakness for pretty faces and tragic backstories. He forgets that our family didn't survive three generations by trusting blindly. Bring him to me."

Julian nodded once and turned toward the heavy oak doors. As he walked away, Eleanor touched the small gold nametag pinned to her vest. It was a symbol not just of her title, but of her survival. She had built this empire from the ground up, navigating corporate espionage and family betrayals that would have crushed a lesser person. Hailey was merely the latest in a long line of opportunists who mistook kindness for vulnerability.

Minutes later, the door creaked open, and Alex walked in. His hair was disheveled, and dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes. He looked at his grandmother with a mixture of grief and resentment.

"You didn't have to humiliate her like that," Alex said, his voice trembling slightly.

"I didn't humiliate her, Alex," Eleanor replied calmly, her gaze never wavering. "I merely revealed who she always was. Sit down. It is time you learned the full cost of your carelessness."
