Chapter 6: The Confession Cell

The Kingston estate's lower security level resembled a subterranean vault rather than a residential basement. Reinforced steel doors and dim fluorescent lighting created a sterile, oppressive environment. Hailey sat on a simple metal cot inside a secure holding room, her magnificent white ballgown now stained with dirt and wrinkled from hours of despair. The glittering gems sewn into the fabric caught the harsh overhead light, looking more like cheap plastic than diamonds under the bleak conditions.
The heavy door buzzed and swung open. Eleanor walked in, her cane tapping rhythmically against the concrete floor. Julian stood guard outside the threshold, his arms crossed over his chest.
Hailey flinched and pulled her knees to her chest, her eyes wide with terror. The haughty, ambitious woman who had tried to seize an empire was entirely gone, replaced by a broken shell of panic and regret.
"Eleanor," Hailey choked out, her voice raspy from crying. "Please... I didn't mean for it to go this far. It was all a mistake."
Eleanor stopped a few feet away, looking down with an expression of profound detachment. "Mistakes are made when calculating numbers or misplacing keys, Hailey. What you did was calculated, deliberate, and vicious. You calculated my age, my schedule, and my vulnerabilities."
"Alex loves me," Hailey whispered desperately, clutching the crumpled fabric of her dress. "He will come for me. He knows the truth."
"Alex is currently reviewing your financial statements in the library," Eleanor said calmly. "He saw the bank transfers, the encrypted messages, and the blueprints of this house that you sold to our primary competitors. He knows you planned to leave him penniless the moment the marriage certificate was signed."

Hailey squeezed her eyes shut, a fresh wave of silent tears tracking down her cheeks. "I had nothing. I grew up in poverty, Eleanor. You wouldn't understand what it's like to starve, to want security so badly that your chest aches."
"Do not lecture me on poverty, girl," Eleanor said, her voice dropping an octave, carrying a chilling authority that made Hailey shudder. "I built this empire from ash and debt after my husband was driven to an early grave by people exactly like you. You think poverty excuses malice? It only magnifies character. Mine made me a builder. Yours made you a parasite."
