Chapter 9

By noon, the financial district was abuzz with breaking news regarding the massive corruption scandal at Sterling Enterprises. Television news vans lined the perimeter of the corporate headquarters downtown, broadcasting live feeds of federal agents escorting detained board members from the building. Inside the executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor, the atmosphere was thick with tension. The remaining independent directors sat in stunned silence around the polished mahogany table as Mark Sterling took his place at the head.
The empty seats where Higgins, Vance, and Miller once sat served as a stark reminder of the betrayal that had nearly brought the conglomerate to its knees. Mark did not waste time with pleasantries or defensive posturing. He opened the dossier before him, his voice echoing cleanly through the acoustic-engineered room.
"You all know why we are here," Mark began, his gaze sweeping slowly across the faces of his colleagues. "For years, a faction within this board, working in tandem with external bad actors led by Arthur Pendelton, systematically siphoned corporate assets and manipulated internal audits. They believed that by embedding operatives into my personal life, they could control my decisions and eventually seize total authority over the trust and the company."
One of the junior directors, visibly shaken, raised a hand hesitantly. "Mark, none of us had any inkling of their involvement. We trusted them."
"Trust is a commodity that must be earned through transparency, not assumed by title," Mark replied evenly. "Effective immediately, every executive compensation package, every internal audit protocol, and every subsidiary holding will undergo an independent, unannounced forensic review. If anyone in this room has even the slightest connection to Pendelton’s network, I suggest you speak up now, because the federal investigators are already tracing every digital footprint."
No one spoke. The silence in the room was absolute, punctuated only by the distant hum of the city far below.

"The restructuring of the board will begin immediately," Mark continued. "We will rebuild this institution on a foundation of absolute accountability. Sterling Enterprises will survive this crisis, not by hiding our flaws, but by cutting out the infection at the root."
As the meeting adjourned, the directors filed out in somber reflection. Mark remained seated for a moment, rubbing the bridge of his nose as the immense weight of the corporate battle pressed down on him. Yet, unlike the previous days, there was a profound sense of clarity. The hidden enemies had been dragged into the light, and the corporate shield was finally being cleansed of its deepest stains.
