Chapter 1

The crystal chandelier above the grand staircase of the Sterling estate cast sharp, prismatic shards across the polished marble floor. Just moments after the chaos in the entrance hall, the heavy silence of the sprawling mansion felt suffocating. Mark Sterling held his seven-year-old son, Julian, close against his chest. The boy's light brown hair was slightly mussed, and the neat bow tie of his vest shirt rested crookedly against his collarbone. Julian’s breathing remained shallow, a residual tremor echoing his earlier shock when Vivienne, resplendent in her glittering gold evening gown, had lunged forward with malice in her eyes. Clara, the steadfast maid in her crisp black dress and white apron, stood a few paces away, her hands clasped tightly together to hide their trembling.
Vivienne stood near the base of the staircase, her chest heaving beneath cascades of sequins. Her aggressive facade had cracked, replaced by a cold, calculating fury as she realized Mark’s dismissal was absolute. The security cameras in the foyer had captured every second of her assault, neutralizing her twisted narrative before she could weave it. Mark’s face was an unreadable mask of granite. He had trusted Vivienne, brought her into the inner sanctum of his home, believing her polished exterior matched a gentle soul. Instead, she had targeted a frightened child over a petty grievance regarding a dropped heirloom.
"You cannot simply discard me like an old piece of furniture, Mark," Vivienne hissed, her voice trembling with indignation rather than remorse. "I have given up my life, my reputation, for this family. That ungrateful brat ruined my vintage silk wrap, and this insolent servant protected him like a shield dog!"
Mark did not raise his voice. When he spoke, every syllable cut through the cavernous hall with chilling authority. "Security has already escorted your personal belongings to the gates, Vivienne. The car is waiting. Do not test my patience further, or I will ensure your name is permanently barred from every respectable establishment in this city."

Clara watched the exchange with quiet vigilance. She stepped forward slightly, her voice low and respectful, yet laced with steel. "Mr. Sterling, if I may, I will take Master Julian to the nursery. He needs to rest after such a fright."
Mark nodded, his gaze softening as he looked down at his son. He gently kissed the top of Julian’s head before handing the boy over to Clara. The maid's arms wrapped around Julian with genuine tenderness, guiding him away from the escalating tension. Vivienne watched them depart, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. She knew secrets about the Sterling empire—secrets Mark had buried deep to protect his family. As she finally turned toward the massive oak doors, a chilling smile touched her lips. This was far from the end; it was merely the opening salvo in a war for control of a broken household.
