Chapter 4

The cool night air drifted through the open French doors of the ground-floor library as Mark slipped out into the dimly lit hallway. The mansion was wrapped in an eerie, unnatural stillness. Every shadow stretched long and distorted under the pale moonlight cutting through the tall arched windows. Mark moved with the practiced stealth of a man who knew every creak of the floorboards, keeping his posture low and his senses razor-sharp. He held the security pistol close to his chest, his thumb resting safely on the manual catch. The perimeter alert had pinpointed the intrusion to the west wing—precisely where the old servants' quarters and the auxiliary archives were located.

Up ahead, a faint sliver of light escaped from beneath the door of the archives room. The heavy oak door was slightly ajar, casting a thin yellow beam across the Persian runner on the floor. Mark paused just outside the threshold, listening intently. He could hear the soft rustle of paper, followed by the muffled, frantic clicking of a portable hard drive being connected to a terminal. Someone was downloading the encrypted corporate archives that he had spent the evening reviewing.

With a swift, decisive kick, Mark pushed the door wide open, raising his stance. "Step away from the terminal, now."

Vivienne spun around, her golden evening gown replaced by a dark, utilitarian trench coat, though her elaborate hairstyle remained largely intact. She looked less like a displaced socialite and more like a cornered predator. Her eyes darted from Mark’s face to the firearm in his hand, a bitter, humorless laugh escaping her lips.

"You always were too quick to draw conclusions, Mark," Vivienne said, her voice dropping its high-society cadence, revealing a hard, metallic edge. "You think you’ve won because you threw me out the front door? You have no idea what forces are backing me. That archive contains documents that could sink your entire empire overnight, and the people I represent are not accustomed to losing investments."

"You are trespassing on private property, and you are engaging in corporate espionage," Mark said coldly, closing the distance between them without lowering his weapon. "The police are already en route. Your uncle’s network cannot save you this time, Vivienne. The game is over."

Vivienne didn't cower. Instead, a slow, chilling grin spread across her face. She reached slowly into her deep trench coat pocket. Mark’s instincts screamed danger; he tensed, preparing to tackle her before she could draw a weapon. But instead of a gun, Vivienne pulled out a heavy gold-plated pocket watch—his late wife’s heirloom, which had supposedly been secured in the main vault.

"You think the vault is secure, Mark?" she whispered mockingly. "We’ve had the combination for months. And while you’re standing here playing the hero, someone else is visiting the nursery. Did you really think I came here alone tonight?"

Mark’s blood ran cold. The realization hit him like a physical blow. The perimeter breach was a diversion.
