Chapter 6

The service elevator cable groaned with a metallic shriek as Mark descended into the pitch-black sub-basement of the Sterling estate. The air down here was cold, smelling of damp concrete, motor oil, and ancient dust. This subterranean level had been constructed decades ago as an emergency fallout shelter, later converted into a private maintenance hub and a secure storage facility for older corporate archives. Few people knew the access codes, let alone the manual override paths, which confirmed Mark’s growing suspicion that someone with high-level access within his own corporate structure was orchestrating the abduction from the shadows.
The lift hit the bottom with a jarring thud. The heavy iron gate slid open manually, revealing the dimly lit expanse of the underground parking garage. Rows of classic cars and modern executive sedans sat silently under the amber glow of overhead safety lights. In the far corner, near the reinforced exit doors that led up to the private access road, a sleek black SUV idled with its headlights off, casting a faint, ghostly illumination against the concrete pillars.
Mark stepped out of the elevator, keeping low behind the bulk of a vintage Mercedes. He held his security pistol steady, his eyes scanning the cavernous space for movement. Two figures stood near the rear doors of the idling SUV. One was a tall, burly man in tactical gear, holding a muffled communication device. The other was small, bundled tightly in a thick gray wool blanket—Julian. The boy was crying softly, his muffled sobs echoing against the concrete walls, though the larger man gave him a rough shake to quiet him down.
A surge of protective fury washed over Mark, burning away every vestige of caution. He stepped out from behind the vehicle, raising his voice to cut through the hum of the idling engine.
"Let the boy go," Mark commanded, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "You have nowhere to run. The perimeter gates are locked down."
The burly man spun around, shoving Julian behind his leg while simultaneously drawing a sidearm from his chest holster. "Stay back, Sterling! One step closer, and the kid takes a bullet. We don't care about the corporate files anymore; our employers want absolute compliance. Sign the asset transfer papers, or your son pays the price for your stubbornness."
"You're working for Arthur Pendelton," Mark stated, not moving an inch, keeping his weapon locked on the man’s center mass. "He’s been hiding behind proxies for years, using miserable cowards like you and Vivienne to do his dirty work."

"Call it whatever you want, boss, but you're out of moves," the mercenary sneer, adjusting his grip on the firearm while reaching for the back door handle of the SUV.
Mark knew he had a fraction of a second to act before they dragged Julian into the vehicle and vanished into the labyrinth of the city. He didn't aim to kill, but he couldn't afford to miss. As the mercenary began to raise his weapon toward the boy as a human shield, Mark squeezed the trigger with cold, calculated precision.
