Chapter 10

The afternoon sun cast a warm, golden glow across the expansive gardens of the Sterling estate. The frantic energy of police sirens and security sweeps had faded, leaving behind the gentle rustle of wind through the ancient oak trees and the distant chirping of birds. Inside the mansion, the heavy curtains were pulled wide open, allowing natural light to flood every corridor, banishing the shadows that had lingered for too long.

In the bright, airy conservatory overlooking the rose garden, Julian sat at a low wooden table with a large box of colored pencils and a sketch pad. His shoulders were relaxed, and the tension that had gripped his small frame since the night of the attack had noticeably dissipated. Clara sat across from him, quietly helping him sort through the greens and blues for a drawing of the estate gardens.

Mark stood just outside the open French doors, watching them with a quiet, appreciative smile. For months, he had been a ghost in his own home—physically present at the dinner table, but emotionally detached, buried beneath the relentless demands of corporate survival and unhealed grief. The crisis had forced him to look up, to see the quiet heroism of the staff who protected his son when he could not, and to realize that true wealth was measured not in capital or assets, but in the safety and love of family.

He stepped into the conservatory, his footsteps soft against the stone floor. Julian looked up, his eyes bright and clear, devoid of the fear that had haunted them days before.

"Daddy, look," Julian said excitedly, holding up a drawing that featured a tall stick figure standing next to a smaller one, with a very large, detailed rendering of Clara holding a remarkably large iron pipe in the background.

Mark chuckled, kneeling down beside his son. "That is an exceptionally accurate portrait, Julian. Though I think Clara’s heroic proportions might be slightly exaggerated."

"Not exaggerated at all, Mr. Sterling," Clara said with a warm, genuine laugh, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "In moments of crisis, we all discover reservoirs of strength we didn't know we possessed."

"You proved that beyond a shadow of a doubt, Clara," Mark said, his voice softening with deep sincerity. "What you did for Julian... what you've done for this family day in and day out, goes far beyond the duties of any employment contract. I want to ensure your position here reflects your true value to this household."

Clara shook her head gently, placing a hand over Julian’s sketch pad. "I don't do it for titles or compensation, sir. I do it because this home needed care, and Master Julian deserves to grow up in peace."

"I know," Mark replied softly. "And from now on, peace is going to be the standard in this house."
